ONU wrestlers finish 7th of 34-teams at Wheaton Invite

Eighth-seeded sophomore Jordan Hardrick (Huber Heights/Wayne) and sixth-seeded freshman Chase Sumner (Ada) each placed fourth to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team to a seventh place finish at the 34-team Pete Willson-Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational Friday and Saturday at King Arena.

Hardrick placed fourth at 165 pounds with a 5-2 record and Sumner placed fourth at 149 pounds with a 4-1 record.

Fourth-seeded senior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) placed fifth at 141 pounds with a 4-2 record and junior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) was 2-2 at 197 pounds to place sixth.

Ada seniors have two February events

Feb. 12 at CHP and Feb. 26 at Vancrest

Ada Senior Citizens have two events planned in February. Details follow:

• Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 12:30 p.m. at the Ada Community Health Professionals Community Room.  Business meeting will be conducted by Vice President Diana Manley.  Then we will play euchre and/or board games. You are encouraged to join for an annual membership donation of $10 payable at this meeting.

• Wednessday, Feb. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at VanCrest of Ada, 600 West North Ave.  We will play euchre and/or board games with our friends who reside here.  Ada area residents over 60 are invited and encouraged to attend. Come join us and enjoy an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

Volunteer income tax assistance available

Provided by ONU business students starting Feb. 11

 Taxpayers in Hardin and surrounding counties can find free income tax assistance from Ohio Northern University business students through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

The VITA program offers free tax help to persons who generally make $55,000 or less who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.

As part of this program, ONU students receive training and become IRS-certified to help prepare basic and intermediate tax returns and identify special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly.

Trustee opening on Ada Public Library board

Nominees must live in Ada school district

The Ada Public Library Board of Trustees seeks nominations to fill an open seat on the board, according to Rhett Grant, library director.

Trustees must live in the Ada Public Library District (same as the Ada School District) and be able to attend board meetings at 9 a.m. on the third Monday of each month.

"Trustees should have an interest in the library, a willingness to serve, and a desire to help ensure that the library is able to offer the best possible services and resources to the Ada community," he said.

Jackie Bailey was a McDonald's staff member

Jackie A. Bailey, 50, died on Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at 6:41 p.m, Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1969, in Lima, Ohio, to John Bailey and Melinda Nichols. Her father and step mother, Wilma Bailey survive in Alger.  Her mother, Melinda Nichols Carpenter survives in West Virginia.

Jackie worked maintenance at McDonald's.  

ONU surplus property sale Feb. 7

The Ohio Northern purchasing department is holding a surplus sale on Friday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the University Warehouse on 4611 St. Rt. 235. This sale is open to the public. Items will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

Items for sale include:

  • dorm wardrobes
  • file cabinets (various sizes)
  • classroom tables
  • chairs (various types and conditions)
  • desks
  • miscellaneous decor and glassware
  • televisions

Additional items will be added leading up to the sale. 

Items must be removed at the time of purchase and all sales are final.

Women’s win streak at five

Men fall to Mt. Union

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team ran its winning streak to five games with a 70-63 victory at Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at the McPherson Athletic Center.

The Polar Bears (15-4 overall, 9-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) were led by seniors Emily Mescher (Maria Stein/Marion Local) and Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) with 14 points each and sophomore Jaidyn Hale (Lima/Bath) with 12 points.

The Purple Raiders (10-9, 4-8) had four players in double figures in scoring, led by Elena Rauhe with 13 points.

Ohio Northern ended the first period on a 14-3 run to lead 18-10 after 10 minutes of play.

Someone turned up the heat and forgot to turn off the water spigot last month.

January 2020’s average high temperature was 39.2 degrees and the average low was 27.2 degrees, making the average January temperature slightly above freezing at 33.2 degrees.

Compare those numbers with January’s normal average temperature of 25.4 degrees. 

And,  while most of us don’t remember the snow, January’s total was 5.6 inches. Precipitation was 4.29 inches. Compare that to the normal average precipitation for January of 2.26 inches.

January’s temperatures ranged 56 degrees during the month with a high of 64 on Jan. 11 and a  low was 8 on Jan. 20.
