Tales of a haunted prison at Ada Public Library

Imagine spending the night in a pitch-black, abandoned, 119-year-old prison, one with a reputation for being haunted. Now imagine doing this willingly, and paying good money for the opportunity, too.

That’s what plenty of sane people do at the Ohio State Reformatory, the huge, castle-like structure in Mansfield that famously lent its brooding, forbidding presence to the hit 1994 movie, “The Shawshank Redemption,” starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. 

Ohio Northern University presents ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” from Oct. 22-25 at 7:30 p.m. There also will be two matinee performances on Oct. 24 and 25 at 2 p.m.

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona” is a charming early comedy from William Shakespeare that features two best friends looking to make their way in the world. When Proteus follows his friend Valentine to Milan, he falls for his pal’s girl, therein prompting that age-old conflict between love and friendship. Adding to the plot are a girl who disguises herself as a boy to follow her guy, love letters, love songs and a clown with a dog named Crab.

ONU Wind Orchestra presents music from Great Britain Oct. 28

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents an evening of music from Great Britain featuring the Ohio Northern University Wind Orchestra on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m.

The Northern Winds, under the direction of Thomas A. Hunt, will perform a concert of British music for winds and percussion, including Gustav Holst’s “First Suite,” Adam Gorb’s Yiddish Dances, Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, and four Percy Grainger favorites.

Bulldog team owns 2015 Northwest Conference volleyball trophy

FIRST ADA TITLE IN 21 SEASONS

Ada High School's volleyball team have a new trophy for the Bulldog trophy case. The team won the Northwest Conference this season.

Melissa Gossard is the team's coach.

This is the NWC volleyball crown for Ada since 1994. The Bulldogs received 2nd seed in tournament play and will play at Ada at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

It's corn harvest time

You hear the rumble of trucks bringing corn into town. You see the "dust" in the fields when harvesters are at work. It's corn harvest season. Here's a familiar site in Ada this month at the grain elevator. It's corn and more corn coming in off the fields. (Kenneth Collins photo)

The Cask Room has Saturday beer-tasting event

Here's some news updates from the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce concerning events in Ada.

• This Saturday, there will be a beer tasting at The Cask Room. From  4:30 – 7:30 p.m. three alumni ONU students will be promoting four flavors of beer from their “Pigskin Brew Co.”

Also a BBQ Wagon will sell sandwich’s out front. A good way to spend a Saturday after the ONU game. 

• Regular membership meeting Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 8 a.m.  at Community Health Professionals.  Discussion will center on last-minute plans for the Halloween event on Oct. 26.
