ReStore gave out $11,560 in meals last year

Brrr. It's cold!

If you you can't come into ReStore because of the weather, ReStore will come to you - with it's winter newsletter. (It's an attachment at the bottom of this story.)

Here's some interesting ReStore stats:

• In 2014, ReStore gave out $11,560.57 in meals, emergency assistance and donations.

ReStore wants to thank all the volunteers and donors who made this possible. Special gratitude to the Western Methodist Conference, for providing $2,000; Steve Eaton and his partner, for donating services to the ReStore auction, which raised $700; and Imperial Cup for paper goods.

ONU's Jordan Kimes scores 1,000th career point

By Caleb Scott

Senior Jordan Kimes scored her 1000th career point and recorded a double-double as the Ohio Northern women's basketball team defeated Muskingum 60-50 Saturday afternoon at Performance Court in New Concord.

The Polar Bears improve their record to 18-5 and 14-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Muskies fall to 6-17,4-12.

Kimes would join the 1000 point club as she scored her 20th point of the afternoon on a free throw with 2:18 remaining in the contest to give Northern a 56-44 lead.

Kimes led all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon and pulled down 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.

Warm twice

He may not be Paul Bunyon from American folklore, but his name is Paul. On a cold morning when the temperature was only 11 degrees, Paul Osborne and his son Jonathan glean wood from Claire Vaubel's home on West Lima Avenue. The work of the chopping and hauling will heat the Osborne home southeast of Ada for a time. Paul says the adage holds true: He who chops his own wood is warm twice...once from the labor, no matter the outside temperature, and once from the heat the wood provides.

ONU biology student sees compost as way to save Ada money

By Amy Eddings

As a biology/pre-med major at Ohio Northern University, Michael Chad Bridges didn’t think he’d be studying food waste. But that’s exactly where the 21-year-old’s senior project has led him.  His research has so convinced Bridges of the economic and environmental value of composting, he’s spoken with ONU officials and the village council of Ada about investing in a system to compost food scraps.

You could say he was inspired by love.

Nobody counting calories

Deb Curlis, Richard Gainey, Jane Helser judge the 20 desserts at the Ada Public Library on Friday.

The Ada Public Library third annual Valentines Chocolate Bake-Off at the Ada Public Library was a grand success with 20 entries and more than 50 tasters enjoying scrumptious desserts.

Young bakers showed their cooking ability. Two fifth graders from the Ada Schools took first and second place: Paige Jochims, first, with chocolate peanut butter dessert, and Sandra Litton, second, with chocolate strawberry pie. Molly Sheets took third place with her frozen mocha cheesecake. Nobody was counting calories.

How does Ada fare?

In this extreme weather?

An update:
• The men's basketball game was delayed an hour due to the Muskingum bus arriving late due to road conditions. ONU won before a good sized crowd who braved the elements.

• Viva Maria diners filled the restaurant on Valentine's Day in spite of the snow and cold.

• Life goes on in spite of what Old Man Winter is throwing at us.
