Book Review: The Devil in the White City

By Robert McCool

First posted on the Icon September 10, 2020.

Welcome to the White City - Chicago in 1890-1893.

It's been a while since I've written a review, as my wife had an emergency back surgery and an extended stay in the hospital that has kept me busy doing other things than writing.

But even as immediate as my time has been recently this book has been on my mind quite a bit. Once again, it comes recommended by a member of the Ada book club, and is justified as a good read.

Did the 13th Amendment end slavery?

By Amelia Alexander

Alexander is an Ada High School student and a regular columnist for the Ada Icon.

I have been learning many things in school that have inspired me to write about them. In government, we are memorizing the amendments. Even the early amendments to the U.S. Constitution that trace back to the 1800s are still extremely relevant. I wanted to write about the 13th Amendment because it pertains to things that the media does not always cover.

What is the 13th Amendment?

Bulldog rally just short vs. rival Polar Bears

By Cort Reynolds

The Ada High School boys basketball team spent most of this home game trying to catch up but never quite could as they dropped a hard-fought 53-47 decision to county rival Hardin Northern in their annual matchup Saturday night, January 15.

The Bulldogs trailed 11-7 after one period, and HN extended the lead to 27-17 at halftime. Ada sliced the deficit to 33-32 late in the third period and crept within three points twice in the final stanza, but never was able to take the lead.

The Bulldogs fell to 4-10 with the non-conference loss. Meanwhile, HN improved to 8-5 with the rivalry win.

Ada boys haunted by miscues at Delphos

By Cort Reynolds

The visiting Ada High School boys basketball team committed costly turnovers in a 54-33 loss to Delphos Jefferson in a Northwest Conference contest Friday night, January 14.

The Bulldogs are 4-9 overall and 0-3 NWC with the defeat. DJ improved to 3-9 and 1-2 in the NWC after the win.

The Bulldogs trailed 17-9 after one period and 30-18 at halftime. Ada was behind heading to the final stanza, 40-26.

"We were way too passive," said first-year Bulldog head coach Vince Halliday. "We were never in the game."

The Bulldogs committed 23 costly turnovers, including 13 in the first half.

Dementia is a general term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline including impairment in memory, communication and thinking, which is caused by damage to cells in the brain. The symptoms do not appear suddenly but build over time and become more noticeable. Damage can occur for many reasons including increased proteins inside and outside of brain cells, lack of oxygen to the brain, stroke, genetics, medication side effects, depression, alcohol use, and thyroid and vitamin deficiencies.
