Hardin crop planting update from Extension Office

With the cool, wet spring, farmers have had trouble getting their planting of corn and soybeans done in a timely manner. Up until June 25, there has been a pattern of heavy rains every week or so which has saturated the soil and increased the length of the planting season. Crops that were planted early and have good drainage in the field have done well and are progressing well except for low areas that have been flooded out. These lower areas have slowed root growth and therefore delayed the availability of nutrients to the plants.

Ada: Past tense and present tense

This month Icon photographer Bailey Bowers uncovers Ada's past and connects it to Ada's present.

Each set is comprised of three photos: past, present, and composite (past and present put together in one photo). Here's the first in this series.

Looking South from ME Church
Pictured here is the view on North Main Street looking south from the Methodist Church.

Some differences between the two scenes are due to the passage of time. These include the change from carriages to automobiles. The biggest difference between the past and the present is a relatively recent one.

Stop and smell the gaillarda

The next time you walk by the Ada railroad depot park, stop and smell the gaillarda. Also, pause and admire the clustered bellflowers, dianthus, bee balm, scabiosa, speedwell and lots of day lillies. Watch for more flowers to smell all week. These flowers will also be posted on the Bluffton Icon this week.
