Did you know she helped train pilots in WWII?

You probably know Mary Bowden, but did you know she was once a link trainer operator?

And, what’s that? Well, during World War II she operated a simulator that helped train pilots.

There’s a lot more to know about Mary, and here’s another thing: this month, she is in the Vancrest resident spotlight.

Mary is a 1941 graduate of Ada High School. Her favorite food is ham and beans with cornbread.

She’s a swimmer and was trained to teach swimming. The “crawl,” now called freestyle swimming, was her favorite stroke.

"Hey, mom, I'm on the ONU billboard"

You've seen this Ohio Northern University billboard north of Ada on State Route 235.

Now you can meet the student featured in the center of this enormous photo just outside of town. In case you missed this, the student photographed is standing in the field pointing to his picture.

Senior nursing student Jarrett Sitton walked into class one day to hear his instructor congratulate him on being famous. When he learned he was featured on a billboard just outside of Ada, Jarrett describes his reaction: “excitement wasn’t even the beginning of it.”

Right away, he called his mom to tell her the news, and of course, her first request was “send me a picture.”

11 candidates vying for this year's junior fair royalty; crowning is Sept. 8

Two Ada High School seniors are among 11 candidates vying for this year’s Hardin County Junior Fair royalty. The Junior Fair king and queen will be crowned on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.

Due to the restricted attendance at the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony will be streamed live to the public on the Hardin County Fair Facebook Page.

Ada’s candidates are Alyssa Wince for queen and Ian Dellifield, for king. Both students were previously named Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative Ada HS students of the month.

Andrew Fleece of Alger was named to the summer Rhodes State College, Lima, dean's list. To be eligible, students need to have earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher and complete at least six credit hours.

Ada High School senior, Alyssa Wince, is the Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative Ada student of the month for September.

Her activities include being a member of the Ada HS marching band where she is the trumpet and brass section leader.

She is also in pep band, Varsity Singers, a member of the National Honor Society and Book Club.

Outside of school she participates in 4-H. She is a member of the Hardin County Junior Fair board and is president of the Ada Barnyard 4-H Club.

Alyssa is the daughter of Jim and Jen Wince and Anne Wince and Jeff Reed.

You work with what you have. If masks are the thing, then make masks. Ada Middle School art students are creating tie-dye masks. We can imagine that there will soon be a great demand for this product.

You might call it functional art. (From Ada Bulldogs Facebook)
