Over 300 volunteer hours went into Red Cross swim lessons

President-elect Heather Cox called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club to order at 12:01 p.m. on Tuesday August 13 in Conference Room #7, McIntosh Center, ONU.

Jon Umphress offered the invocation.

The birthday of Sandy Neely (August 15) was noted in song.

The membership anniversary of Myrna McCurdy (8/13/07) was noted.

The wedding anniversary of Mark and Kimberly Light (8/12/1995) was also noted.

Kiwanis Club honors Von M. "Spot" Spellman with tree planting

Ada Kiwanis member Charles Van Dyne presents a special photo to Patsy Evans, of Ada. Evans' father, Von M. "Spot" Spellman, who was honored for his longtime Kiwanis service by the planting of a tree by the club in Ada's War Memorial Park.

The recent Kiwanis meeting was held to honor former Kiwanian, Von M. “Spot” Spellman. Normally, the dedication is held at War Memorial Park, but with the threat of prediction of inclement weather, the event was moved in-doors.

F&M Picnic: And the kiddie pedal pull winners are...

Ada's Kiwanis Club conducted the kiddie pedal pull at Saturday's Farmers' and Merchants' PIcnic. Here are the winners:

Class 1, age 3 & 4, 19 contestants

1st Rebecca Preston, Ada
2nd Eric Williams, Ada
3rd Reese Jordan, Alger
4th Keelan Kirwan, Rockwood, Ontario, Canada

Class 2, age 5 & 6, 26 contestants

1st Kennedy Jones, Ada

Class 3, Age 7 & 8, 19 Contestants

Natilyn and Ethan reign as princess and prince of F&M Picnic

Ada first grader, Natilyn McClain, reigned as princess of the 100th annual Ada Farmers' and Merchants' Picnic. The prince was Ada sixth grader Ethan Hull. Madilyn raised $2,466 and Ethan $2,076 as they topped all other contestants in money raised in the contest. 

Natilyn's sponsors were Three Brothers Pizza and 302 Carryout. Ethan's sponsors were Ohio Cart Parts and Amburgey's Construction.

Other contestants were, for prince: Trison Dalton, 3rd grader; for princess: Haley Clay, 3rd grader, Allison Dotson, 7th grader, Kia Hefner, 2nd grader, Madison McCoy, 3rd grader at Hardin Northern, and Madison Melton, 2nd grader.

Cliff Maier will head the Ada Music Boosters in 2013-14

The Ada School Music Boosters  recently elected new officers for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year. The new officers are:

Glen Stearns honored at Gene Autry 75th anniversary celebration

During the Gene Autry 75th anniversary celebration the Hardin County Chamber & Business Alliance and the Gene Autry Days Committee honored Glen Stearns the founder of Gene Autry Days. The celebration was held at the Gene Autry Mural Park, located at the corner of West Franklin and Market Streets in Kenton.

Gene Autry visited Kenton on August 8, 1938, to tour the Kenton Hardware Company which manufactured his repeating cap guns. Gene and his horse Champion held five performances at the Kenton Theatre which over 4,000 people attended. Records indicated that over 6 million Gene Autry Cap Guns were manufactured at the Kenton Hardware Company.
