School daze - summer's here

The 2013-14 school year is in the books. Bailey Bowers captured some interesting scenes as elementary students left the school building for the last time until August. Here are some of her photos.

Hardin Tailwaggers 4-H Club preparing for summer

The Hardin County Tailwaggers are already four meetings in for the 4-H year, and the members are preparing for fun shows and state fair this summer.

As the weather warms up, the club works to get their dogs in top condition for the upcoming fair this year. Currently meeting are being held every other Thursday and when school is finished it will pick up to every Thursday.

Between obedience, showmanship, and agility the dogs and their owners have enough to keep them busy this summer. The workouts have been great so far and everyone is looking forward to a great year ahead.

 

Ada Elementary student contribution to St. Jude Math-A-Thon tops $100,000

Here's a math formula for you:
Ada students + St. Jude Math-A-Thon (x 19 years) = $103,466/19

The Ada Elementary School has participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon for 19 years. This year students collected $5,422.19 with 69 students participating, Teri Salyer told the Icon. 

She added that 2014 was a special year as Ada Elementary has donated over $100,000 for kids with cancer, $103,466.19 to be exact.

Kelly Kobiela: "Reading is cliché for a librarian, but I enjoy it"

“I like being part of the community,” shares Kelly Kobiela, an Ada resident of almost two years. “I like living in Ada because I can walk or bike to work,” says Kelly.  Kelly came to Ada after seeking employment that would bring her closer to her Auburn, Ind., roots from a job at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire.

Ada Barnyard Farmers will have petting zoo at library

The Ada Barnyard Farmers 4-H Club met on Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Alexis Amburgey. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kaitlin Long, and the 4-H Pledge was led by Mackenzie Long. Secretary Shelby Hazelton called roll, and * members were present. There was an introduction of visitors.

Secretary Shelby Hazelton read the minutes of the previous meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Brice Ferguson read the treasurer’s report. The advisors gave a report.

Kiwanis Club awards four scholarships to seniors

The Ada Kiwanis Club awarded four scholarships to the following Ada High School seniors at the Senior Awards Banquet held May 14: Hattie Dearth, Shelby Conner, Hannah Bass and Matthew Wilcox.

John Berg, President-Elect of the club presented the awards. The Ada Kiwanis Club has presented scholarships to graduating seniors for the last several years.

Berg noted that the main thrust of Kiwanis International is to help the children of the world and seems fitting that the Ada Kiwanis Club would choose to make the annual presentations.

The Ada Kiwanis Club was founded in 1924 and is in 90th year of service to the Ada community.
