Casey earns Oxford masters degree

Leah E. Casey, 2017 Allen East High School graduate and formerly of Ada, recently earned a Master of Studies in English “With Distinction” from The Queen’s College, The University of Oxford, England.

Casey is currently employed full time at Shearman and Sterling LLP, an international law firm in Manhattan, where she is preparing for law school.

The wait is over. Ada Elementary School principal Jeremy Clark has provided the Icon with class lists for 2022-2023.

The class lists are attached and include the names of students in K-6 classes, with the following teachers:

ONU tennis star receives NCAA postgraduate scholarship

Ohio Northern University 2022 engineering graduate Andrew Cochran, an accomplished tennis player, has been selected to receive a coveted $10,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Cochran, who graduated from ONU this spring with a degree in electrical engineering, was a four-year member of the men's tennis team.

Raingutter Regatta is a kid-magnet for scouting

On Tuesday, July 26, Ada Cub Scout Pack 124 drew a dozen or so youngsters to a meeting introducing them to scouting. The kid-magnet was the Raingutter Regatta, a friendly competition to see who could sail a tiny catamaran down a length of raingutter with lung power alone.

Prospective scouts and younger siblings tested their lungs and aim, often finding the task harder than it might sound. Many brought boats with custom paint work. The kids cheered each other on and suggested tips on technique when sails went sideways.

“I want to be the officer who takes care of the other officers,” commented Corporal Lonny Kent when asked why he chose this time to retire from the Bluffton Police Department. 

Graduating from Ada High School in 1977, he obviously is not old by today’s standards, but after 31 years on the job, he does not want others worrying about him because of his age while he is on the job.

Hardin Leadership Class supports nonprofits with funds and volunteers

The 2022 Hardin Leadership class has been challenged to design and conduct a Class Community Project (CCP), to be completed by the end of their program year. Here are their plans and a question, where do you fit in?

The Hardin Leadership 2022 class chose four nonprofits to assist by working at the agencies:

  • Heartbeat of Hardin County
  • Love, Inc.
  • New Hope Shelter
  • Safe Haven.
