Here's a clever way to provide a quick reference guide to Ohio Northern University. Not every university in the U.S. could pull this off. The Icon saw it on the ONU website.

She's fifth generation at Sheldon Gas, Dunkirk

Note: This is one of several stories about recent ONU grads from the ONU website. Lindsay Walden is from Dunkirk.

Growing up, family and business were one and the same to management major Lindsay Walden.

For 105 years, her family has operated Sheldon Gas Company, Inc., a natural gas distribution company based in Dunkirk, and now she will become the fifth generation to take over the reins.

Although she knew this career path was always an option, that didn’t get in the way of her bettering herself through higher education.

She battled cancer to earn ONU degree, pursue career

Alexandra Mercorell: "My motto is to keep moving forward and take life one day at a time ... and helped me understand that what we do in medical labs has meaning"

Alexandra Mercorelli of North Canton, Ohio, proved the power of perseverance through her graduation from Ohio Northern University this spring.

She also earned a prestigious Dorothy Morrison Memorial Scholarship from Alpha Mu Tau fraternity, which advances professionals in the clinical laboratory sciences, for graduate study.

Mercorelli, a North Canton High School graduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science after sitting out much of the previous year for surgery and rehabilitation to have a cancerous tumor removed from under her shoulder blade.

More ONU student award winners

Ohio Northern University recognizes students, organizations with DeBow Freed, Alice-Kay Hilderbrand leadership, community service awards

Several Ohio Northern University students have been recognized for their leadership on campus.

The DeBow Freed Award for Outstanding Student Leadership as an Undergraduate Student is presented annually to one male and one female student from each undergraduate class. The award recognizes recipients for their positive leadership in the campus community.

The first awards were presented in 1999 and are named in honor of the former president and current president emeritus of the university, who has dedicated his life to the virtue of servant leadership.

Catherine Freed Outstanding Leadership and Service winner

Business administration grad is 2019 recipient

Kara Dilts of Fredericktown, earned the 2019 Catherine Freed Outstanding Senior Female Leadership and Service Award from Ohio Northern University.

Dilts, who attended Fredericktown High School, graduated from ONU this spring with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

During her college career, Dilts made a lasting impact on the campus and local communities through her work with ONU outreach efforts.

Dilts was actively involved with the “Ada Friends” program that is sponsored by ONU’s religious life program. In this endeavor, she served as a mentor for a local youth and also was coordinator of the program.

Initial funding from Dr. Roger H Goldberg's family

Scholarship endowment established to continue Dr. Roger H. Goldberg’s impact at Ohio Northern University

As a professor and administrator, Dr. Roger Goldberg dedicated his career to Ohio Northern University and to ensuring ONU students had the best possible educational experience.

In acknowledgement of his passion for education, Dr. Goldberg’s family has provided initial funding to create a scholarship endowment in his name to honor and extend his commitment to the university’s students.
