Ohio Northern University faculty members Ross Kauffman and Keith Durkin have taken an interdisciplinary approach to the multifaceted problem of opioid abuse in the region.
The resulting paper from their research, “Impact of Emotional Distress on Prescription Opioid Abuse in a Rural Juvenile Drug Court Sample,” was published in the December 2019 edition of the Ohio Journal of Public Health.
The paper involved a study of youths in Hardin County (Ohio) between January 2010 and November 2018.
Kauffman, Ph.D., is the director of public health in ONU’s Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, and Durkin, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology at Ohio Northern.
Julie Grantier of NASA Glenn Research Center will discuss “Shooting for Mars: How Engineering at NASA is Evolving” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts at Ohio Northern University.
The talk, which is part of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering Spotts Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

Grantier, a 1988 ONU mechanical engineering graduate, is currently the senior technologist for systems engineering and integration at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson will provide an update on the current state of the opioid crisis in Ohio during a brown-bag seminar at noon Monday, Feb. 10, in the McIntosh Center Wishing Well at Ohio Northern University.
The event, which is sponsored by the Northern Opioid Alliance, is free and open to the public.
Gilson has been the director of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner and Crime Laboratory since 2011. He has previously served as chief medical examiner for the State of Rhode Island as well as a deputy chief medical examiner for the City of New York, state of New Hampshire, and state of Connecticut.
The gray hues of winter can cause people to suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder), which is more than just a case of the winter blues.
“This is a very real condition, and the seriousness to sufferers is undeniable,” said Hannah Stokes, assistant professor of psychology at Ohio Northern University.
“This is a specifier for major depression disorders, and the farther a person lives from the equator, the more likely is the occurrence of SAD.”
The Ohio Northern purchasing department is holding a surplus sale on Friday, Feb. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the University Warehouse on 4611 St. Rt. 235. This sale is open to the public. Items will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

Ohio Northern University has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the PPG Foundation on behalf of its coatings services facility located in Lima.
The funds will support the ONU Smull College of Engineering’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities by expanding participation in the TEAMS competition hosted by the college.
With the grant funding, PPG will become the primary sponsor of the annual TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition.
