Weekend Doctor: Public pool safety reminders

NOTE: The Ada Municipal Pool will be open through August 13, which is also the date of the Farmers & Merchants Picnic.

Everyone loves to take a dip in the pool, especially during the dog days of summer While swimming is a great way to play, exercise and cool off, there are certain things to keep in mind. More than 1,000 children die each year from drowning, and many others suffer life-changing injuries. Help protect your family by using the following safety tips when swimming in public pools.

AHS marching band preview on July 29

The Ada High School Marching Band Camp will perform at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29 by the school cafeteria.

This will be a preview of this year's competition show and music for the upcoming season.

August 5 community celebration for Mental Health Awareness

We Care People is hosting Celebrate You 2022: For Mental Health Awareness, a free event on August 5 at Vibe Coffeehouse & Cafe, 311 E Market St., LIma. The adult-only event starts at 4:00 p.m.

The event will include performances by Mixed Vibes, Courtney Owens as MC, and expressive art from Artspace/Lima and Voices of Prosperity.

Taco Movil Lima and Aysha’s Subs & Burgers will be there along with other food trucks.

We Care People is also known as the Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin Counties.

JD Owen Band performs at VFW on July 30

The Ada VFW Post 9381 will host the JD Owen Band on from 6:00-10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30.

"Join us for some music and fun. Weather permitting JD will be playing out on the patio. Bring lawn chairs if you want," is the note from the VFW, located at 2147 State Route 235, one mile north of Ada.

Raingutter Regatta is a kid-magnet for scouting

On Tuesday, July 26, Ada Cub Scout Pack 124 drew a dozen or so youngsters to a meeting introducing them to scouting. The kid-magnet was the Raingutter Regatta, a friendly competition to see who could sail a tiny catamaran down a length of raingutter with lung power alone.

Prospective scouts and younger siblings tested their lungs and aim, often finding the task harder than it might sound. Many brought boats with custom paint work. The kids cheered each other on and suggested tips on technique when sails went sideways.

Fruit and vegetable crop walk on August 2

Open to commercial produce growers and home gardeners

HARDIN COUNTY – Hardin County OSU Extension has planned a Fruit and Vegetable Crop Walk program on Tuesday,  August 2 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. that addresses fruit and vegetable production issues in the region.

The location of  the program will be on a produce farm at 15237 County Road 209, Kenton. It is open to all fruit  and vegetable producers, whether they are commercial or home gardeners.
