Bears baseball tops Oberlin 4-1 in earliest home opener yet

By Tim Glon

Ohio Northern scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and post a 4-1 victory over Oberlin on a chilly but nice Thursday afternoon, March 2, at Wander Field in Ada.

The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Yeomen fall to 1-2.

The contest was the earliest recorded home opener since ONU began playing baseball in 1891. In 2016, Northern swept a double header from Oberlin 7-2 and 1-0 on March 12 at Wander Field in the previous earliest home opener.

Pitching dominated the early stages of the game as the two teams combined for just three hits and no runs in the first five innings.

ONU women advance in DIII basketball tourney, beat Berea 54-43

Senior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored 12 or her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 16-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 54-43 victory over No. 25 Berea (Ky.) in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.

"It was a grind," ONU head coach Mark Huelsman said. "Tons of credit to Berea. They played really well defensively and were really physical. We had a hard time getting the shots that we wanted on offense, and they had players make tough shots down the stretch. They won 26 games for a reason. I was proud of our players for showing the toughness down the stretch to be able to pull out a really good NCAA Tournament win."

Varsity Singers equipment truck and trailer experience icy roads

The Ada Exempted Village Schools has reported that the Varsity Singer equipment truck and trailer went off the road on SR 235 near the VFW this morning, March 4: "All are ok and no students were involved. The Varsity Singers have canceled their trip to the Solon competition."

There are road closures from overnight flooding and the possiblity of black ice.

While the day's forecast looks promising (mostly sunny, with a high near 45) for areas north of Ada, the National Weather Service issued this warning:

...Slick and Icy Roads Possible Overnight (March 3)... With wet and slushy roads tonight across the area from the earlier snowfall and rainfall, roads already in many spots are hazardous with several reports of vehicles sliding off of roadways.

Overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s which could freeze the wet surfaces making them even more hazardous in spots with black ice development and even freezing the slushy wet snow further making for very slick surfaces, especially over bridges and overpasses.

Definitely recommended to not travel if possible. If travel is necessary, be sure to slow down and leave plenty of stopping distance in front of you in case you need to stop suddenly. Be safe out there.

March 3 warning of flooding on county roadways

Approx. 9:00 p.m. March 3 Road Conditions Announcement by Hardin County Sheriff:

Due to the continued rainfall across the area, our office is getting several calls about spots of high water across roadways.

All of the 'High Water' signs available in the county have been placed on roadways at this time.

We would like to remind motorists that attempting to cross roadways with water across it is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted. As night falls, water across the roadways is more difficult to see, thus motorists should allow extra time to be able to make it to their destinations safely.
