Ada's temperature's rising

Agriculture division chairs Phyllis Griffith and Madelyn Lowery show the Ada United Way thermometer the week of September 29. Nineteen county agencies will benefit from the donations, with a goal of $155,000.

Extension Rainfall Report for August

During the month of August, Extension volunteer rainfall reporters received an average of 2.36 inches of rain. The most rain for this month, 3.91 inches fell in Washington Township as measured by Randy Preston. The least rain reported during the month, 0.95 inches was reported in Liberty Township by Phil Epley. During the same month last year, an average of 4.34 inches of rain fell.

The rainfall recorded in August over the past ten years averaged 3.59 inches.

Ada harriers run at Bath

Four Ada cross country runners competed in the Bath Invitational meet Tuesday evening, September 28.

Ada sophomore Elsie Allen finished 43rd with a time of 27:57.27. Classmate Jillian Hazelton came in 50th in 29:48.52.

Junior Taylor Spencer of Waynesfield-Goshen won the 60-runner girls race in a time of 19:52.99, 30 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Shawnee won the girls team title with 25 points. Waynesfield was second with 72, followed closely by Wapakoneta (73), Kenton (80) and Elida (113).

Six other schools were represented but did not have enough runners to post a team score.

Initial thoughts on filling an Iconoclast’s shoes

Effective October 1, 2021, I am the full-time editor-owner of the Bluffton and Ada Icons. In following founder Fred Steiner, I know that I have big shoes to fill. Fred took a big leap when he created the Bluffton Icon in 2009 and, in 2012, the Ada Icon. My leap from employee to self-employed is much, much smaller. I’m inheriting some 20,000 monthly viewers of Bluffton area news and some 8,500 monthly viewers of Ada area news.

I’m also resting on the shoulders of Icon tech master and interim owner Ryan Lowry, who is still the wizard who keeps the online magic working.

Five 2021 inductees to ONU Athletic Hall of Fame

The Ohio Northern University Athletic Hall of Fame will induct five members this year.

The inductees in the fall 2021 class are

Charles E. “Gene” Downing worked for Village of Alger

Charles E. “Gene” Downing, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at 6:02 PM at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on October 1, 1948 in Rushsylvania, Ohio to the late Harold and Nellie (Grubbs) Downing. On October 13, 1970 Gene married Juanita M. Hollis and she survives in Alger.

Gene retired from the Village of Alger, where he worked in the town maintenance department.
