Isolated benzene release reported at Lima Refining

November 7, 2024 

Lima Refining Company is responding to a release of gasoline vapors from a tank vent, which  contributed to benzene readings in an isolated area for a short time. Shawnee Township Fire  Department and EMA are on scene. 

As a precautionary measure, community members were asked to avoid Buckeye Road. That road has since been opened.  

2025 Hardin County dog tags go on sale December 1

$20 license required for all dogs over 3 months of age

The Hardin County Dog Warden has issued the notice below regarding dog tag requirements and sales. Sales include the following Ada area locations:
- Ada Animal Hospital, 4736 SR 235, Ada
- Middlefield Bank, 118 S Main, Ada
- Online at www.doglicenses.us/OH/Hardin/

Liberty Township tax levy renewal fails, local park levy and utility aggregation are approved

Ada and Liberty Township voters have unofficial results from the Hardin County Board of Elections for the following ballot issues from the November 5 general election.

  • Renewal of the Liberty Township levy for current expenses failed 1194 to 1174.
  • Renewal of the Liberty Township Park District levy passed 1353 to 1031.

Both Village of Ada utility aggregation issues passed:

  • Gas aggregation passed 784 to 605
  • Electricity aggregation passed 779 to 613

Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Updates from the CDC

On September 15, 1980, American rocker Pat Benatar released her single Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Eddie Schwartz, who wrote and produced the song, was inspired after he started using bioenergetics. His therapy was punching a pillow. Bioenergetics involves improving well-being while releasing blocked energy.  

This song was Benatar’s first top 10 hit in the United States. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November of 2022.  She no longer includes this song in her concerts as a protest to mass shootings.

Ada’s Jolliff named 1st team all-district, all-state soccer

Joliff to play in November 17 All Star game

Ada High School senior goal-scoring ace Logan Jolliff earned Div. V Northwest all-district first team and all-state soccer honors in voting recently conducted by area coaches.

The speedy Jolliff netted 31 goals, including a school-record nine in one game vs. Cory-Rawson, this season. He also passed out 10 assists for 72 points.
He finished among the top eight in voting for the all-district squad, which automatically made him an all-state choice.

Three Ada girls receive district soccer honors

Three Ada High School girls soccer players received Div. V All-Northwest district honors in voting recently conducted by area coaches.

Senior forward Lexi Poling made the second team. She scored a team-high 11 goals and passed out one assist to finish 2024 with 23 points.

Junior playmaking midfielder Alex Gibson also earned second team all-district notice. Gibson led Ada with five assists and also netted four goals to total 13 points this season.

She took most of the team’s corner kicks and directed much of the offense with deft passing.

Icons to feature new streamlined design

During the weekend of November 9-10 the Bluffton Icon will transition to a new streamlined, 2-column design. During that window of opportunity, we’ll also be on an extended Veteran’s Day weekend holiday with content for both websites on pause except for breaking news, including sports.

The design includes several new features:

ONU dedicates new visitor bleachers at Dial-Roberson Stadium

Ohio Northern University dedicated new state-of-the-art bleachers at Dial-Roberson Stadium on November 2, 2024. The bleachers, gifted by alumnus Ted Stambaugh, BS ’77, add nearly 500 seats to the stadium, more than doubling the capacity on the visitor side.

“We are extremely grateful for Ted Stambaugh’s generosity and support,” said ONU President Melissa Baumann, Ph.D. “Completing the visitor side seating takes Dial-Roberson stadium to the next level and will benefit generations of student athletes and fans.”

Fatal accident near SR 68 and TR 114 in Pleasant Township

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Monday, November 4, the Hardin County Central Dispatch Center received several calls about a car accident in the area of State Route 68 and Township Road 114, in Pleasant Township.

A gold Chrysler Pacifica driven by Lee Newman of Dunkirk was traveling Northbound when it went of the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. James Hagenbuch, of Findlay, the front passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Dr. Fritz of the Hardin County Coroner’s Office.

A backseat passenger, Douglas Inmon of Dunkirk ,was transported to Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus by Careflight with suspected serious injuries.
