Ada Historical Society meet on Monday

The Ada Historical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the Ada Public Library, 320 N. Main Street, Ada.

All are welcome. 

National honors to ONU student public relations society

Chapter earned Star Chapter Award for 10th consecutive year

The Ohio Northern University chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received several honors during the recent national conference in San Diego, Calif. 

The ONU chapter earned the Star Chapter Award for the 10th consecutive year.

This award recognizes chapters for achieving goals such as programming and relationship-building. The ONU chapter’s achievements include conducting workshops, excelling in client work for the student-run True North PR firm and offering members opportunities to learn more about the profession through tours of public relations firms in various cities.

ONU vs. Wilmington: win for women, loss for men

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team slowed down the high-scoring Wilmington Quakers Wednesday night en route to a 72-64 victory. The win improves the Polar Bears to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the loss drops the Quakers to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference. 

Wilmington entered Wednesday's game averaging north of 87 points per game, and ONU held the Quakers to a season-low point output. Wilmington hit 40 percent (22 of 55) of its field-goal attempts and 29.2 percent (7 of 24) of its shots from 3-point land.

Alyssa Wynce, Riley Ferguson, Morgan Dirmeyer on Junior Fair board

Three Ada students will represent Ada 4-H groups on the Hardin County Junior Fair Board in 2020. The students are Alyssa Wince, (returning member), and new members Riley Ferguson and Morgan Dirmeyer.

Bulldog cards for winter sports available

Here are some school announcements pertaining to the last weeks of school for 2019.

VARSITY A:
The new Bulldog Card for the winter sports season is now available in the high school office.  Students interested in earning an open lunch, stop in to pick up your card.

DATES TO REMEMBER:
Dec 13 - Career Day field trip for juniors at Rhodes State campus 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Dec. 17 - High School Band & Choir Winter Music Concert – 7 p.m. in the auditorium

Dec. 20 - End of 2nd 9-week grading period

Dec. 23 - Music Booster Executive Board meeting at 6 p.m.

Several ONU soccer players have all-regional honors

Ohio Northern sophomore midfielder Levi King (Indianapolis, Inc./North Central) was named First Team All-Great Lakes Region in men's soccer for 2019 in voting conducted by the United Soccer Coaches.

King is a two-time All-Region honoree after earning Third Team honors as a freshman in 2018.

He is also a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and was named the OAC Freshman of the Year last season. He was named First Team in 2019 and Second Team in 2018.

Ada council passes 2020 appropriations

General fund total $2.1 million; capital improvements $3.2 million; enterprise funds $2.5 million

Ada council passed its 2020 appropriations on Dec. 3. Those follow by fund:
• General fund $2,100,625
• Special revenue funds $859,000
• Capital improvement funds $3,286,950
• Debt service funds $335,000
• Enterprise funds $2,502,350

General funds include elected officials, administration, finance, income tax administration, zoning and planning, police, Hardin Drug, Hardin DUI, public works, health and welfare, tree commission, municipal facilities and transfers out.

Special revenue funds include street, highway and swimming pool funding. 

Ada funeral director, Bruce Neely, announces retirement

Owner of Hanson-Neely Funeral Home for nearly 46 years; retirement open house planned Dec. 27

Bruce Neely, funeral director and owner of Hanson-Neely Funeral Home of Ada and Alger, has announced his retirement after serving the Ada community for nearly 46 years.

A retirement community open house takes place at the funeral home, 311 E. Lima Ave., Ada, from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 27.

“Since serving area communities from January of 1974 it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement,” he said.  

Nick Wright was a manager at Cappie Sportswear

 Nicholas J. “Nick” Wright, 36, died on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019 at 10:20 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on Nov. 1,1983, in Lima, Ohio, to Randy and Kim (Smith) Wright, they survive in Harrod.  On April 29, 2017, Nick married Rachel McClure and she survives in Alger.

Nick was the manager of the Embroidery Department at Cappie Sportswear of Lima.  He also worked at Colonial Hills Golfers Club and was an avid golfer.

Also surviving are his brother, Adam Wright of Harrod; a sister, Jennifer (Darren) Meeks of Harrod; one nephew; and his father and mother-in-law, Steven and Julia McClure of Alger.
