Katayama wins twice at Holiday Invite

Lady Bulldog swimmers finished eighth out of 23 schools; Bulldog boys came in 11th out of 22

LIMA - Ada senior Klava Katayama won two races handily to pace the Bulldog swimmers in the annual 23-team Holiday Invitational meet at the Lima YMCA Monday. 

The Lady Bulldog swimmers finished eighth out of 23 schools with 135 points, while the Bulldog boys came in 11th out of 22 by scoring 51 points.

Katayama touched first in the 50 freestyle by 1.16 seconds, and took first in the 100 butterfly by a whipping 3.34 seconds. 

Freshman Carlie Oldfield posted a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke and came in seventh in the 50 free.

Ada junior Paige Cole captured sixth in the 100 fly.

Logan Conrad, senior, is the January Ada HS Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative student of the month. The Icon took this opportunity to sit down with him and have a 15-minute interview, which follows:

Icon: How many years have you attended Ada?
Logan: I started here as a freshman.

Icon: What’s your class schedule?
Logan: Psychology/Sociology, economics, physics, study hall, CAD II, AP English 12, calculus, study hall.

Mark Niles, Christiaan Williams D3football all-Americans

Niles led OAC in most tackles; Williams in rushing

 D3football.com released its list of All-Americans and two Ohio Northern standouts were recognized.

Senior linebacker Mark Niles (Miramar, Fla.) added to his collection of postseason awards, as he was named second-team All-American. Junior running back Christiaan Williams (Sidney/Anna) reeled in honorable-mention All-American recognition. 

Choose Ohio First grant to ONU totals nearly $1.8 million

Funds will be invested over 5 years to support enrollment and fund scholarships and grants for students in computer science and computer engineering in the Smull College of Engineering

Ohio Northern University has been awarded nearly $1.8 million from the Choose Ohio First program to increase the number of students pursuing careers in the areas of computer science and computer engineering and, consequently, the number of computing professionals in the state.

The funds Ohio Northern has been awarded will be invested over five years to support enrollment and fund scholarships and grants for students enrolled in computer science and computer engineering disciplines in the ONU Smull College of Engineering. The goal is to increase first-time enrollment in these two programs. 

Guy S. Brashear 1936 - 2019

Guy S. Brashear, 83, died on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at 11 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on March 9, 1936, in Pulaski County, Missouri, to the late Fred L. and Blanch R. (Hammock) Brashear. Guy married Wilma Salyer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, and his daughter, Beverly Brashear.

He retired from the Campbell Soup Company where he worked for over 35 years.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957. 

Guy is survived by his step-son, Roger (Carolyn) Dockery of Defiance; and two sisters: Chloe Cole of Ada and June (Henry) Pelton of Swanton.  

Delmar Moore 1953 - 2019

Delmar J. Moore, 66, died on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at 11:04 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1953, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky,  to the late Sammie and Maudie (Chaffin) Moore. On April 14, 1982 Delmar married Corrine Moore and she survives in Kenton.

Delmar worked as a welder for Union Tank of Marion, he previously worked in the coal mines in Kentucky.  He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church of Lima.    

Terry Fuqua 1960 - 2019

Terry L. Fuqua, 59, died on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at 5:30 a.m. at the Indian Lake Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1960, in Phoenix, Arizona, to the late Raymond M. and Ruth (Stephenson) Fuqua.  

Terry worked for the Coca-Cola Company. 

 He is survived by a son, Joshua Fuqua of Kenton; a daughter, Deborah Fuqua of Ada; two grandchildren; two brothers: Raymond (Marsha) Fuqua of Ada and Doug Fuqua of Toledo; and four sisters: Sharon Wells of Delphos, Tony Sinift of Toledo, Kathy (Rick) of Hillard Viccaro and Tammy Frazier of Cairo.

Terry was preceded in death by a brother, Carlos Fuqua.

Evans leads Ada matmen at Parkway

Reece Evans posted top Bulldog finish coming in second in 160 lbs. class

PARKWAY - The Ada wrestling squad finished sixth at the 10-team Parkway Invitational Saturday.

Celina won the event with 384 points, finishing well ahead of second-place Spencerville (294). Ada scored 94 points.

Bulldog senior Reece Evans posted the top Bulldog finish by coming in second in the 160 lbs. class. He went 3-2 in the competition, losing in the title match of his weight bracket to Troy Smith of Delphos St. John's, 8-4.

Chase Martin of Delphos St. John's was named tournament MVP after winning all four of his matches at 170 lbs.

McGUFFEY - Tournament host Upper Scioto Valley used a big third quarter to beat spunky backyard rival Ada 56-49 in the finals of the third annual boys Border Battle basketball tournament Saturday night.

USV 6-5 senior Quinn Sanders scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Rams to victory.  

Ada had its three-game win streak snapped as they fell to 4-6. USV improved to 6-4 by winning their third consecutive boys Border tourney title.
