Jeannine M Dixon, 1933 - 2018

Jeannine M. Dixon, age 84, died on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 1:05 p.m. at Vancrest of Ada.

          She was born on December 27, 1933 in Allen County, Ohio to the late Marshal E. and Boneta M. (Hall) Stoodt.  On June 7, 1953 Jeannine married Kennard I. Dixon Jr and he preceded her in death on July 3, 2006.

          Jeannine retired as a cashier for the Flying J. Restaurant in Beaverdam and formerly worked at the Bluelick Greenhouse, which in now the Forget Me Not Greenhouse.  She was a member of the Liberty Chapel United Methodist Church.  Jeannine enjoyed bowling and golfing.

Men’s outdoor track ranked 3rd

The Ohio Northern men's outdoor track and field team has been selected to finish third in the team standings in the annual Ohio Athletic Conference coaches poll voted on by the leagues 10 head coaches. Mount Union and John Carroll were picked first and second.

Northern finished second in the outdoor standings a season ago and posted its fourth consecutive top-3 finish.

ONU opens its 2018 campaign on Saturday, Mar. 24 as it competes in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.

St. Rita’s lifts restrictions on visits

With a continued decrease in influenza through our community and a decrease in positive influenza admissions, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center has lifted the restrictions prohibiting those under the age of 14 from visiting the hospital.  

The hospital will continue to discourage anyone who  is exhibiting signs of illness from visiting their loved ones so as to prevent any future spread of the flu.  

The hospital encourages everyone to cover their cough and wash their hands.

Bruns named 2nd team All-American

Ohio Northern junior Ryan Bruns (Chickasaw/Marion Local) was named 2nd team All-America in men's basketball for 2018 in voting conducted by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3hoops.com.

Bruns was also named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and First Team All-Great Lakes Region this season.

He was second on the team, third in the OAC and 12th nationally in scoring at 24.0 ppg this year.

Jumbo Jr. Farmer’s 4-H meeting report

Jumbo Junior Farmers 4-H Club held their first meeting on  March 12, at 6:30 p.m.. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kevin Smith followed by the 4-H Pledge led by Asher Bridenstine.  Each member introduced himself to the club. 25 members with 3 advisors and 9 parents/guests were present.

Election of officers was held. The 2018 officers are: President- Alexa Lowry; Vice President- Grant Smith; Treasurer- Drew Hoppe; Secretary- Helena Taylor; Reporter Noah Ketcham; Health- Claire Ketcham; Safety- Tate Ketcham; Recreation: Jeffery Bushong, Isaac Fent, Dylan Lowry, Quinn Dyer, Kevin Smith and Adelyn Bridenstine

Eight Ada artists in Kewpee show

Eight Ada High School students have had work accepted in the Kewpee High School Art Invitational now on display at Art Space in Lima. The work of two local students was judged tops in printmaking.

Jonathan Rettig’s “The Hand” won first and Kylie Guagenti’s “Reflective” received second place in printmaking.

Science Day Saturday at ONU

Students from 85 high schools in 10 counties will display their projects at the Mathile Center on Saturday morning during the annual Science Day held at Ohio Northern for many years. Winners will advance to state competition. ONU science faculty members and students in PAWS (Professional Association of Women in Science) will serve as judges.

ONU prof to speak at Oxford

Dr. Diana Garlough, ONU assistant professor of education, will speak at the World Literacy Summit in Oxford, England, on March 27. She is chair of the Department of Education and the accreditation coordinator for teacher education at ONU.

Her presentation involves “Moving the race/culture discussion forward in classrooms” and uses a framework meant to promote racial healing through honesty, empathy, advocacy and action. “The framework I will present is one means of helping teachers feel comfortable talking about race in classrooms,” Garlough explained.

Greavu sculpture displayed in Lakeland, Fla.

Judy Greavu, ONU art professor emerita, has had a sculpture accepted for display in Lakeland, Fla. The sculpture was one of 10 selected from 65 proposals for display along Lemon Street from now until the end of 2018.

Lakeland lives up to its name with two lakes in the heart of town with many pieces of sculpture near the water’s edge. Sculpture also can be found at a nearby park in the center of town as well as along downtown streets.
