James Bond and Danny Ocean were no-shows, but we walked out the casino with $$ in our pocket

The Icon editor recently took a mini-vacation, visiting his daughter in Cincinnati. Among exploits was a visit to Jack’s Casino. This is an account of that adventure.

By Fred Steiner

Knowing nothing about cards and less about other games of chance, my daughter, Anne, and I decided to have some fun. We made a date with Jack’s Casino.

It’s pretty simple. Pick a slot machine. Drop in coins. Pull lever. Watch money pour out. So we thought.

It's starting to feel like a tradition: Lima Symphony, July 4th weekend and Ada

Photos and story by Monty Siekerman

LOTS OF PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF STORY!
Hundreds gathered on the lawn of the ONU sculpture mall on Saturday evening to be thrilled with a patriotic-pops concert by the Lima Symphony Orchestra.

The number of people attending was comparable to last year's inaugural holiday concert of 1,000.

As ONU President Dan DiBiasio noted in his comments, once something happens at Ohio Northern for two consecutive years, it becomes tradition. He, and the many others in attendance, are hopeful 2017 will see the third annual patriotic-pops concert.

ReStore picnic in the park - a great launch for a Fourth weekend

Story and photos by Monty Siekerman
ReStore sponsored a picnic in the park on Friday afternoon with a police car, big red fire truck, and an ambulance on hand for kids to see.

The 4th of July weekend began with perfect weather for the event.  It was hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and salads for the in a War Memorial Park shelter house. In addition, all youngsters were given a toy, their faces lighting up in happiness.

The kids enjoyed seeing the emergency vehicles and meeting some of the personnel: good public relations  for the Ada emergency responder crews and educational for the youngsters.

Some Hardin wheat testing at 15.8 percent moisture

By Mark Badertscher, Hardin County Extension Office
Wheat harvest has begun in Hardin County.

Yesterday while out doing farm visits, I stopped by to talk to a farmer who was opening up his field.  The wheat was testing 15.8% moisture so he decided that he was going to wait and let it dry down.

Today while out visiting farms and agribusinesses, I saw a couple other farmers combining wheat in the northern part of the county.  According to our weekly Ag Crops team conference call on Monday, southern Ohio has reported very high yields.
