July 28 Lunch and Learn focus on growth strategies

Protected growth strategies in a low interest rate environment is the topic of a free lunch and learn program held in Ada later this month.

The program takes place from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, July  28, at Community Health Professionals, 1200 S. Main St., Ada. Liberty National Bank of Ada is the program and lunch sponsor.

Chad Newsome and Michael McMeans will present the program. Persons interested in attending must rsvp by Thursday, July 21 to Deb Curlis at CHP, at 419-634-7443.

Alger First United Methodist VBS July 17-21

Alger First United Methodist Church will hold its Vacation Bible School from Sunday, July 17, through Thursday, July 21, at the church.

Thsi year's VBS theme is "Men of the Bible." Youth ages Kindergarten through sixth grade may participate. VBS hours are 6:30 to 8 p.m. Contact Cristal at 567-674-7474 for more information.

Melina Woods on AAU volleyball team with third place national finish

Ada High School junior, Melina Woods, recently competed in the AAU National Volleyball Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. She and her teammates from Elite Volleyball Training Center in Plain City, Ohio, placed third out of 114 teams.

Woods and her teammates from 16 Elite Black made it to the semi-finals with a 12-0 record before falling in three sets to the eventual champions from Nebraska.

In four days of play, 16 Elite Black defeated teams from Texas, Washington, South Carolina, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and South Dakota.

Village Garden shows off Ada gardeners' green thumbs

The Village Garden is full of edible food, drawing growers from far and wide.

Pictured are Shaheed Khan and his mother, Sherin, immigrants from Bangladesh, who are growing some foods common to Americans, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as some vegetables and herbs that are hard to find in the stores here.

The garden, located behind Liberty National Bank, is run by ReStore Community Center.

The Khans have lived in Ada for about a year. Shaheed will be a senior in high school here this fall.

Varsity Singers' 2016-17 show premier performance Friday evening

"Love is in the Air" and you can't help but fall in love with the 2016-2017 Ada Varsity Singers show.

You can watch a special free premier performance at 7 p.m., Friday, July 15, in the Ada High School auditorium.

The Varsity Singers are putting their "heart and soul" into working hard this week to learn this year's competition show.

Under the direction of their new vocal director, Scott Henning, instrumental director, Jonathan Lischak, and new choreographer Zach Triscari, the VS plans to compete at Piqua, Findlay, Medina, Marion Harding, Marysville, as well as host their annual Music Feast show choir competition this school year.

Trey Manning of Alger entered his 2011 Ford in the County Line Church of the Brethren car show on Saturday.

Ada third overall in WOAL; Klava Katayama wins four events

Ada Alligators swim team finished third of eight teams in this past weekend’s Western Ohio Aquatic League meet held at Bluffton. In the girls’ standings, Ada finished fifth overall. In the boys’ standings Ada finished third overall.

While Ada had several place finishes, two swimmers won first place races. Max Baumgartner, 8 and under, won first in the 25 freestyle.

Klava Katayama won five events in the girls 13-14 age group. She won the 100 intermediate, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 100 freestype.

Here's Bob Blank's REO and Larry Dudgeon's patrol car

What do you do with an old farm truck once you are finished farming with it?

Spruce it up and enter car shows, so says Bob Blank of Pandora. He entered this Diamond REO pickup in the County Line Church of the Brethren car show on Saturday. The pickup has a mere 375,000 miles on the odometer.

 A Florida State Trooper in the area? Larry Dudgeon of Bluffton entered his 1991 former patrol car in the car show.

The church's 10th annual car show drew 59 entries this year.

What you'll find at Ada's "Walden Pond"

Thoreau was insired by Walden Pond. Ken Collins said he finds photographic inspiration in the ONU pond, and a chance to relax on a summer afternoon.

Beth Wisecup 1965 - 2016

Beth Wisecup, 51, died on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at 11:50 a.m. at the Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.

She was born on March 28, 1965, in Hillsboro, Ohio to Hugh Edward and Marilyn (McCluer) Wisecup. Her father preceded her in death and her mother survives in Harrod.

Beth was a member of the Harrod United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Allen East High School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the family cat.

Also surviving is a brother, Andy (Carolyn Cross) Wisecup of Lima.
