Mark Badertscher of the Hardin County Extension Office provided the Icon with the following announcement concerning water quality problems in Lake Erie and it's relationship to Hardin County.
The announcement follows:
As a result of the water quality problems in the western basin of Lake Erie, funding has been made available to Hardin County farmers who have land in the Lake Erie watershed.
This is basically land north of State Route 309. Funding is available through the Hardin SWCD/NRCS until Tuesday, Aug. 26. This funding is to plant cover crops, install blind inlets and drainage control structures.
The 2014 Icon weekly high school football contest is back! The first week has 10 games plus two tie-breakers. The first week's contest is a practice round for contestants.

Here's how the contest is played:
1 - Contestant's may enter as often as they wish, but may only enter their own name one time per week.
2 - Entry deadlines are 5 p.m. each Friday.
3 - There will be one weekly winner. If there is a tie, the contestant who entered earliest will be declared the winner.
Ohio Northern was picked to finish second in the Ohio Athletic Conference preseason volleyball poll conducted by the league's 10 coaches.
Northern finished the 2013 season 19-9 overall and finished third in the OAC with a 7-2 record.
ONU received 75 points in the poll.
Mount Union was once again picked first with 81 points and nine first place votes, Heidelberg was picked third with 65 points and one first place vote, and John Carroll was picked fourth with 54 points.

The annual fall Ada community pep rally is set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Ada War Memorial Park. That announcement is among several concerning next week at Ada schools. The other announcements follow:

A fire destroyed the residences of Dean and Rita Nichelson and Donna Nichelson on Aug. 4. Both dwellings and all of their contents were a total loss.
An account has been set up at the Ada Office of the Liberty National Bank to accept financial donations for the Nichelson families for temporary housing and for the re-building and re-furnishing of their homes.

Ticket pre-sales continue until Friday, Aug. 22, for the annual Ada Music Boosters Chicken barbecue. Held before the first home football game of the year, the barbecue will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 29. The Bulldogs host USV at War Memorial Stadium, game time 7:30 p.m.
The annual Chicken barbecue is a major fund-raiser for the Ada Music Boosters with proceeds benefitting numerous projects for the Ada School’s music department. Contact any band or choir member to purchase tickets, or call Dave Smittle at 419-230-8147. Tickets are being sold now through Aug. 22.
The Ohio Northern University Metzger Nature Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an open house and picnic on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m.

Parents, teachers, and students know it’s about that time. Ada Schools resumed classes for the 2014-2015 school on Monday, August 18th. Ohio Northern undergraduate courses are scheduled to resume on Monday, August 25th.
Those involved in back to school activities have their to-do lists full. Those who aren’t directly involved in activities make think the bustle at this time of year have nothing to do with them.
