Bluffton author reads from his eco-thriller "Arctic Rising" March 14

The Ohio Northern University Department of English presents  Bluffton author Tobias S. Buckell in the Wishing Well at the McIntosh Center on Thursday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. The Caribbean-born, New York Times best-selling author will read from his eco-thriller “Arctic Rising.”

The event is free and open to the public.

Buckell’s work has been translated into 16 different languages. He has published some 50 short stories in various magazines and anthologies and has been nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, Prometheus and Campbell awards.

Ada prom is 47 days away and counting

Here’s a conversation with three Ada High School juniors, Alexis Rhodes, Hannah Price and Bri Agner. 

What classes are you taking this semester?
Hannah: English, Algebra II, Art III, Anatomy, Government, Spanish III and Crafts.
Alexis: Crafts, Spanish IV, English, Algebra II, Anatomy, Government and Spanish II.
Bri: Varsity Singers, English, French IV, Algebra III, Government, Art III and Anatomy.

Update! New murals almost finished in Ada Public Library

It has been two more weeks since we originally posted this story of the ongoing mural project at The Ada Public Library.  It's all still progressing nicely and you'll find NEW photos at the bottom of this story.  The flying books are inspired by the book "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore." 

The Ada Public Library is adding bright and colorful new murals to its kids reading area, all courtesy of two generous and talented Ohio Northern University art professors.

Landmark Supreme Court case concerning gun control to be discussed at ONU

Richard Heller, the plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court decision that said the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a gun, will discuss the landmark case, District of Columbia vs. Heller, in the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law’s Large Moot Court room on Friday, March 15, at 12:15 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Ada HS band "excellent" at District III event

The Ada High School Concert Band attended the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Band and Choir Competition on Friday, March 8 at Lima Senior High School.

The 38-member Ada band was rated "Excellent" by a board of judges for District III of the OMEA.

Ada's band competed in Class C, performing three selections in front of a panel of judges who offer written and verbal comments. Ada played "Valley Forge" by King, "Kentucky 1800" by Grundman, and "Spontaneous Combustion" by Sheldon.

Cash Mob strikes downtown Ada business on Tuesday

The secret’s out. The Buy Ada First Committee, planning the community’s second cash mob, this week announced the location of the event.

The cash mob takes place at one of Ada’s prominent retail businesses, Health-Chek, 117 S. Main St., from 3 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 12.

“Alisa Armbrecht welcomed our invitation to host this event,” said Heather Cox, member of the committee. “We hope to continue more cash mobs in Ada during 2013.”

New Leaf taking reservations for its March 23 spring seminars

New Leaf Lawn and Garden Center, 0395 State Route 235, Ada, still has room in its Saturday, March 23, spring seminars.

Due to limited seating and lunch provide, New Leaf’s staff asks that participants call for reservations. If you cannot attend the store has copies of the handouts provided for you to obtain. You may attend one or each of the workshops.

Bob Dylan tickets on sale for April BGSU concert

Legendary musician and cultural icon Bob Dylan will perform at the Bowling Green State University Stroh Center on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

Doors open at 6:30, Los Angeles-based folk-rock band Dawes opens the show at 7:30 p.m., and Dylan takes the stage at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets went on sale Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m. at the Stroh Center box office and at ticketmaster.com.

General admission tickets are $35 and $45. Student tickets are $25 and available with a student ID at the Stroh Center box office.

"Community Highlights" returns in a new format - lists events taking place in Ada

The Ada Community Improvement Corp. “Community Highlights” calendar is back. In late 2012 Ruth Roider retired from creating the bi-monthly calendar.

The Ada Icon offered to continue this valuable community service, and the CIC accepted the Icon’s offer. The March-April version of the calendar was sent to CIC members and others on the CIC e-mail list yesterday.

A copy of the Highlights is an attachment found at the bottom of this story.

Angela Polachek, of the Village of Ada said, “In an effort to get an even wider distribution of the information in the Highlights, CIC wants to try something a little different.”
