Freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) clinched All-American honors at the 141-pound weight class with a 7-5 decision Friday night, March 11, on the first day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday at the Alliant Engergy Power House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Reed (40-5) is 2-1 thus far in the Championships and will face Josiah Gehr of Messiah (Pa) in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.
Freshman Hunter Kauser (Paulding/Exempted Village) homered off the first pitch he saw in his collegiate career on Monday to lead the Ohio Northern baseball team in its 9-4 loss to Immaculata (Pa.) in the RussMatt Invitational tournament at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, FL.
The Ohio Northern baseball team enters its 2022 season with a young roster, but 11th-year head coach Gene Stechschulte is excited about the group's potential.
"This will be the first season since my first year at ONU that there's going to be question marks at most of the positions," Stechschulte said. "There's a mix of excitement and not knowing how things are going to work out because we haven't seen many of our younger guys in games yet. It'll certainly be different, but with that comes excitement."
Ada High School sophomore Clayton McClain competed in the Div. III district wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, at Hobart Arena in Troy.
McClain authored a 1-2 mark in the 126 lbs. bracket of the double-elmination event to finish his season with a 27-11 record.
McClain won his first-round match Friday by a 5-3 decision over fellow sophomore Levi Griffin of Middletown Madison.
In his second round bout vs. undefeated Miami East senior Max Shore, McClain was pinned at 1:09 to drop into the consolation bracket.
