A certain sign of spring! Connie Fleming reported the first robin sighting of 2014 in Ada. She spotted 10 robins in her backyard. She snapped this photo on Valentine's Day at her residence on East Lima Ave. Now we await the first crocus of the spring.

Liberty National Bank approved Welcome Home Grant

Ronald L. Zimmerly, Jr., president and CEO of Liberty National Bank,  announced the bank’s participation in the Welcome Home Program, which is a grant sponsored by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati.

The Welcome Home Program was designed to assist eligible homeowners with down payment or closing costs when purchasing or buying a home.

The Welcome Home Program provides up to $5,000 in grant money for eligible homeowners and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Welcome Home funds will be available starting March 3, 2014, and will end when the money is no longer available.

Apollo Career Center Instructor nominated as National SkillsUSA Advisor

Toby Prinsen, Apollo Career Center automated manufacturing instructor, has been named Region III Advisor of the Year for SkillsUSA.

A letter of notification stated that, “due to your dedication to the organization and your many accomplishments as a career and technical educator, you were chosen as the overall winner for Region III.”

Mustard Seed Cafe, Bluffton, offers New Orleans-style Mardi Gras dinner features

Mustard Seed Café,  562 N. Main Street, Bluffton, will have New Orleans-style Mardi Gras dinner features on Feb. 28 and March 1, 5:00-8:00 p.m.  In addition to the full menu which includes 7 appetizers, 8 main course items, soups, salads and house-baked desserts, the café will offer Creole Shrimp & Grits and Jambalaya.

Kings Cake is one of the dessert offerings.  Choose your piece of cake from the tray and, if you find the toy, you will receive a gift certificate.

Beer and beer cocktails are available, including a special Mardi Gras Cocktail.

Tory Wyss named to first team all-NWC basketball

Allen East senior Kaycee Rowe was a near unanimous selection choice as 2013-14 NWC Player of The Year in voting by Northwest Conference girls basketball coaches.  Rowe received 119 of a possible 120 first place points to earn POY honors over Crestview junior, Lyndsey Motycka (109 points) and Ada junior, Tory Wyss (106 points).

Rowe averaged 18.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.6 steals per game in leading the Mustangs to a 6-2 conference record and second place in the NWC.

Rowe, Motycka and Wyss were joined on the NWC First Team by Bluffton senior Sarah Schriner and Columbus Grove junior Sydney McCluer.

Meet Dexter Woods

My name is Dexter Woods. I am 10 years old and in the fourth grade.  Last summer was my first year in 4-H. I learned a lot and had fun.

4-H has kids of all ages. My club, Liberty Belles and Boys, used Parliamentary Procedure to make the meetings run smoothly. Everyone had to do a demonstration. Mine was on tying knots for fishing.  We also played games and had snacks at every meeting.

In July I went to 4-H camp at Camp Ohio. I got up early every morning to do the Polar Bear Swim, and I won a certificate.

Other activities at camp included creeking, dancing, archery and trivia. One night there was a campfire.
