Fire blight cause of tree removal; public meeting on April 14 will focus on other trees

Bob Gould (left), village street superintendent, removes a pear tree from in front of Quest on Main Street. The pear trees all along Main are in decline due to fire blight.

A public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church to discuss the issue.

There are 100 trees along Main. Village officials, tree commissioners and Brad Burns, a certified arborist, were on hand Wednesday morning to observe the tree removal. All went well.

The trees are in an 18 inch well, not 3 foot deep box as thought. Removal of the tree did not break up the sidewalk or gutter. Not all trees are infested at this time.

It's ONU vs. ND Friday night in robotic football; but wait until you hear about the real ONU-ND football game of 1913

By Monty Siekerman
ONU faces Notre Dame in football Friday night under the lights, but it isn't what it seems.
The football contest features robots. The "lights" are inside King-Horn, a gymnasium, not turf.

And, ONU is out for revenge...no one today can recall the time Notre Dame skunked ONU 87 to naught, with a real pigskin...that was 102 years ago...in 1913.

Now there is a story behind the football drubbing that ONU took at the hands of the Irish more than a century ago.
