Soroptimists attend "Mind the Gap"-themed conference

Members of Soroptimist International of Kenton/Hardin County traveled to Ann Arbor Michigan to attend the 115th Midwestern Region spring conference. The theme for the weekend was “Mind the Gap.” It relates to this year’s international convention in Dublin, Ireland and reminds attendees the need to bridge the gaps between members—generations, beliefs, backgrounds and more.

Remembering Mr. Brown

Ada resident and former Bluffton High School teacher Gary Brown passed away on April 25; his obituary is HERE.

Pardon the following recollections. They may be hit-and-miss, because as M. Twain claimed “The older I get, the more clearly I remember things that didn’t happen.”

Funny how you continue to address your high school teachers as “Mr.”, “Mrs.,” or “Miss,” long after your own graduation in the world of adults.

Mr. Brown–also known as Gary Brown–is a perfect example. This past  winter I saw him in the bank, and said, “Hello, Mr. Brown,” as our conversation began. I’d never considered, “Hello, Gary.” That would have the broken unwritten rule number one between student and teacher. At least in my day.

Aaron Spar selected as a Jefferson Award "unsung hero"

By Paula Scott

For a recipient of a regional 2023 Jefferson Award and someone who earned Eagle Scout rank in spring 2022, Ada resident Aaron Spar is pretty matter of fact about his accomplishments. But as a scout with Down Syndrome, he is an exceptional individual in an elite group and has been spotlighted across area media.

Soroptimists pin new members

Kenton/Hardin County Soroptimist International president Karen Kier opened the club's April meeting and welcomed guests Pat Smith and Maria Santo to the event and a meal prepared by the Elks staff.

The president's report included an update on District Science Fair and a very poor turnout of students. To promote women in STEM, the club judges female-led projects and provides an award. The winning project was “Biological and Chemical Assessment on the Mad River Over Five Years” by Benjamin Logan School student Winnie Bodin. She was presented with a certificate and a $25 Amazon gift card on behalf of the club.

Kier shared her experience attending the SIA International Women’s Day Tea Party; the focus was on education and Dream Big projects. A recap of the Celebration of Women was shared.

After learning about Everhart’s prognosis and the significant costs after insurance posed by his operation, a group of community members formed the Hope for Everhart committee and set out to explore fundraising options.
