Ada seniors take a walk

An Ada High School graduation continued today as members of the 2019 class held its final walk-through of the school building. Cheering on the seniors were students who lined the hallways.

Three from Hardin County are Bluffton University grads

Justina Fuqua-Black of Ada, earned a bachelor’s degree in social work during Bluffton University’s 119th annual commencement ceremony on May 5.

Blake Obenour of Dunkirk, earned a bachelor’s degree in business
administration.

Jacob Sherrick of Harrod, earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

2 retired Bluffton police chiefs have Ada connections

FROM BLUFFTON ICON - Two Bluffton persons with Ada connections were recognized this month by the Bluffton police department.

The two are retired Bluffton police chiefs, Rick Skilliter, husband of Ada school superintendent, Meri Skilliter, and the late William Gaiffe, whose daughter is Pat Wyss, and grandsons are Todd Wyss and Sam Kragalott of Ada.

Skilliter and Gaiffe are the first inductees to a Wall of Honor, recognizing retired Bluffton police officers.

Bluffton police chief Chief Ryan Burkholder read the following about the two 2019 inductees:

Six Ada seniors get Ada Kiwanis Club scholarships

Rob Allison, Raina England, Kana Arn, Cade Mullins, Sumaya Tasnim and Keli Trudeau

The Ada Kiwanis Club awarded academic scholarships to six members of the Ada High School graduating class of 2019 at the annual Senior Awards Honor Dinner on May 15.

Kiwanis President Joe Ferguson presented the scholarships to Kama Arn, Rob Allison, Raina England, Cade Mullins, Sumaya Tasnim and Keli Trudeau.

Ferguson said, “The Ada Kiwanis Club has been serving the Ada community for 95 years by raising funds for worthy causes. The International focus of Kiwanis International is “Serving the Children of the World.”

He added: "Our club has chosen to provide six academic scholarships to deserving students to help them realize their dreams.

Area students on Rhodes State spring dean’s list

Rhodes State College, Lima, announces its dean’s list for the spring semester. 

To be eligible for this Dean’s List, a full-time student must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Literacy director speaks at Kiwanis meeting

Ken Blanchard, Director of Allen County Literacy, last week spoke to the Ada Kiwanis Club about volunteering to be a literacy tutor. He noted the following statistics:

• 50% of the chronically unemployed have poor literacy skills.

• The U.S. Military spends $70 million per year in teaching basic skills to recruits.

• 75% of the U.S. prison inmates do not have a high school diploma.

• It is estimated that limited literacy costs the U.S. businesses and taxpayers $20 billion in lost business earnings, wages and taxes.
