ONU Symphony to present ‘American Essence’

The Ohio Northern University Symphony will present “American Essence” on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct the program, which will feature works by American composers. The program also will include an Ohio premiere of a piece,a guest pianist, and the ONU Dance Company.

 

The concert opens with Copland’s “Billy the Kid Suite,” taken from the ballet about the American Old West outlaw and moments in his life. The orchestra will then perform music from Disney films, in collaboration with the ONU dance program, choreographed by Kathryn Braunwarth.

ONU students heads national organization

Ohio Northern University student Colin Lombardi of Milan, Ohio, has been sworn in as president of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA).

 

The national organization represents more than 4,600 members and 92 chapters nationally, and its mission is to serve undeserved and promote minority student pharmacists. Lombardi, a fourth-year pharmacy major.

 

Beyond his academic pursuits, Lombardi is a former kicker on the ONU football team and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

ONU alumni invited to sing in concert

 

The ONU music department will celebrate 90 years of music at Ohio Northern with a coral collage concert at Homecoming. All music alumni are invited to sing in the choir.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 in Presser Hall.  The concert will be followed by a dinner for all participants at 8:30 p.m. at Viva Maria’s Restaurant.

Chicago sax player to perform Tuesday

Saxophonist Derek Brown will present a concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in Presser Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

 

A Billboard-charting saxophonist/innovator, Brown is known for his one-of-a-kind solo “BEATBoX SAX” project. Brown crosses genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects.  Brown is based in Chicago, playing in various bands and projects in that area as well as worldwide.

 

He earned his bachelor’s degree in music performance from Hope College and his master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music.

Tuba concert set for Monday

David Saygers will perform a tuba concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1 in Presser Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

 

Saygers is the artistic director at the Toledo School for the Arts.  He will play the full gamut of sounds, octaves and emotions that can be performed on the tuba, from the remarkably soft to the loud volumes that the instrument can create.

 

He received his master’s degree in musicology from Bowling Green State University and did his doctoral studies in music performance from the University of Michigan.
