New findings on heart disfunction in cancer patients

Researchers from ONU and OSU

A 2021 cancer study conducted by Ohio Northern University and The Ohio State University professors is calling into question a prevailing treatment mindset regarding heart dysfunction, which could have implications for future cardiac care.

Artist-in-Residency brings Inlet Dance Theater to Ada

The ONU School of Visual and Performing Arts will present Ohio-based dance company Inlet Dance Theatre in a joint concert with the ONU Dance Company on Feb. 5 and 6 at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 6.

“Inlet Dance Theatre and the ONU Dance Company” is the culmination of an intensive two-week artist-in-residency. ONU has hosted artistic director Bill Wade and teaching artist Joshua Brown for creative lectures, master classes, choreography collaboration and a performance showcasing the merging of both companies in concert.

Polaris annual submission deadline nears

Polaris, the annual undergraduate journal of arts and literature at Ohio Northern University is accepting submissions of previously unpublished undergraduate work for the 2021-2022 edition featuring fiction, nonfiction, poetry and visual art. Deadline: Feb 2, 2022.

Prizes are awarded in each genre: 1st Place – $50, 2nd Place – $25. Prizes are awarded by genre editors.

Winners will be published in Polaris and all contest entries will be considered for publication. There is no monetary compensation for general acceptances.

Ohio Northern alumni gatherings Feb. 25-27

Ohio Northern Alumni have been invited to attend a Polar Bear Party during the weekend of Feb. 25-27. Across the country and virtually, alumni have opportunities to celebrate being a Polar Bear by reminiscing and connecting.

The Office of Alumni Egagement notes, "We will be celebrating in-person at events across the country and virtually where you are. You can host your own Polar Bear Weekend event at home with family and nearby friends, or hop on Facebook to join ONU’s virtual community online."

Students reflect on the life of MLK and his visit to Ada

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022, the Icon offers the following contribution from Ohio Northern University, where Dr. King spoke in January 1968.

In a new installment of the public policy series “Critical Questions,” ONU student fellows Kennedy Aikey and Hailey Trimpey reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK).

Aikey and Trimpey discuss Dr. King’s role in the civil rights movement, his legacy and the history of King’s visit to ONU in 1968, just months before he was assassinated. They note that King participated and contributed to the civil rights movement in many ways: 

Canvas & Cocktails hosted by The Inn on February 5

The Inn at ONU, 401 West College Avenue, is hosting Canvas & Cocktails from noon to 3 p.m. on February 5. The event combines the opportunity to create a winter scene on canvas or wood while enjoying a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic beverage.

Artist Nancy Boaz is the instructor. All supplies, instruction and a beverage are included. Reservations and prepayment are required. Choose a project medium: wood ($85.00) or canvas ($70.00). Call 419-772-4266 to reserve a spot.
