NASA Artemis I: “the sky is the limit” for ONU engineering students

The launch of Artemis I has been postponed by Hurricane Ian.

Several Ohio Northern University alumni are hoping to see their hard work blast off, literally, during the much-anticipated Artemis I mission’s Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket launch [originally] planned for Sept. 27.

According to NASA, this uncrewed flight test “will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration and demonstrate our commitment and capability to return humans to the Moon and extend beyond.”

‘Julius Caesar’ opens Freed Center season on Sept. 29

The Freed Center will open its slate of theatre, dance and music events for the 2022-2023 season with Shakespeare's epic political tragedy of Julius Caesar staged in the Stambaugh Studio Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 – Oct. 1, and 2 p.m. matinees on Oct. 1 and 2.

Making his directing debut at ONU, Assistant Professor of Theatre James Savage, Jr., explains his approach to the play beginning with the “belief that art makes us think and, at its best, creates dialogue.” This is evident with Julius Caesar, a timeless play that audiences still find fascinating.

ONU youth cheerleading clinic on October 15

Ohio Northern will host a Youth Cheerleading Clinic on October 15. Cheer clinic participants get into the football game for free. Parents and family members will need to purchase a ticket. 

Registration Deadline: October 1, 2022. Past uniforms and spirit wear will be for sale at the door.

ONU volleyball through the lens of Title IX

Serving an ace
The volleyball program at Ohio Northern University is legendary, with a tradition of achievement that few Division III schools can match.

In the program’s 63-year history, the team record stands at 1,383 wins and just 457 losses. Since the Ohio Athletic Conference began sponsoring volleyball in 1984, ONU has dominated with 27 OAC Regular Season Championships and 22 OAC Tournament Championships. And, in the 41-year history of the NCAA Division III Tournament, ONU Volleyball has made 33 tournament appearances, which ranks second among all DIII institutions.

Behind these incredible statistics are stories of female coaches and players whose grit enabled ONU Volleyball to evolve from an insignificant intramural program into a powerhouse in Division III athletics.

As ONU commemorates the 50th anniversary of the passage of the groundbreaking Title IX legislation, the coaching icons of ONU Volleyball are speaking out about breaking barriers and building success in women’s athletics.

ONU's Alexander discusses the Electoral College

BLUFFTON—Rob Alexander, the Wilfred Binkley endowed professor of political science and director of the Institute for Civics and Public Policy at Ohio Northern University, provided insight into the Electoral College during Bluffton University’s Sept. 20 Forum in Yoder Recital Hall.

“The institution of the Electoral College is a little bit like the weather,” Alexander explained. “People know something about it, they have opinions on it, but as you learn more and dig a little bit deeper into it, your opinions may change.”

ONU breeding program helping endangered Plains Garter Snakes

An abrupt U-turn happened this summer when Ohio Northern University biology professor Katheryn Krynak, Ph.D., was taking a road trip during one of her rare days off work. The reason: Momma Snake was giving birth.

Granted, a snake in labor isn’t usually cause for such a sudden change in human plans, but in this case, the snake in question is a member of a species that’s been listed as endangered in Ohio since 1974. In fact, the only Plains Garter Snake colonies that live in the wild in the Buckeye State are located at Kildeer Plains Wildlife Area (KPWA) in Wyandot and Marion counties.

Ohio’s captive Plains Garter Snakes, which are part of breeding programs to increase the population, reside at the Columbus Zoo, where the species’ first captive breeding program began in 1999; at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo; and now at Ohio Northern University.
