Check your sources

By Karen Kier, Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

We learn early in school to find credible sources when writing a paper. Many may remember encyclopedias or going to the library to read a book to take notes.  We have become a society of instant gratification with Google or asking Siri or Alexa for an answer.

Meeting and greeting new students, new ONU president

On August 17 new Ohio Northern students were greeted by GNBs (Good News Bears) and by the university's new president, Dr. Melissa Bauman. Move-in day is a big deal on campus with reverberations around town.

GNBs at the corner of College and Main streets waved welcome signs, received "beep-beeps" of support from truck drivers and greeted everyone who came their way. FYI, this is one of the largest freshman classes to date, with about 677 students and some 400 arriving last Wednesday.

Ball of Confusion

The Temptations released the song, “A Ball of Confusion” on the Motown label in 1970.  The song was featured on their Puzzle People album and was written by the team of Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. The song was a political statement on the chaos and disorder with the pervading times.  The lyrics are still relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The lyrics, “ball of confusion, oh yeah, that’s what the world is today” can certainly be applied to the SARS-CoV-2 mutations, the spread of monkeypox, and the new cases of polio.

College town atmosphere ramps up beginning Aug. 17

Are you ready for some freshpersons? Ohio Northern University new student move-in is less than a week away. During August 17-21 new undergraduate and new law students will first arrive on campus, followed by returning students.

An early opportunity see and meet new students is ACE Community Day on August 20. Ada Community Engagement Day, or ACE Day, is a university tradition held on the Saturday of Welcome Weekend.

The university details "ACE Day provides an opportunity for incoming freshmen to serve the Ada community, their new home for the next four, five or six years. Projects include a variety of tasks, such as painting, gardening, washing fire trucks and more."

Weekend warriors

By Emily Baum and Evan Bruggeman, Student Pharmacists with Karen Kier, Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

Exercise is a critical piece to overall health. The Heart Foundation provides a list of the top 10 reasons why someone does not exercise.  The top three are: I am too tired, I can’t afford a gym and I don’t have time.

So, could concentrated time exercising be a potential solution, giving credence to the notion of a weekend warrior?
