ONU receives grant for after-school enrichment program

 

Ohio Northern University has received a grant from the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) to develop an after-school enrichment program to improve the delivery of the plant biology and botany curriculum to seventh- and eighth-grade students in the Marysville Exempted School District.

The project, titled “Planting Seeds of Science: Roots, leaves and STEM in the after-school and summer enrichment program,” is under the direction of Linda Young, ONU professor of biological sciences, and Vicki Motz, visiting assistant professor of biological sciences and Union County Master Gardener.

Ohio Northern University receives grant to build mobile solar energy lab

 

The Ohio Northern University T.J. Smull College of Engineering has been awarded a Dominion Higher Education Partnership grant to develop and implement a mobile solar energy lab. Dominion Foundation is the charitable arm of Dominion Resources, Dominion East Ohio’s parent company.

Engineering students will design an experimental apparatus to demonstrate the operation of solar thermal and photovoltaic systems.  The finished product will be used in undergraduate engineering courses on thermodynamics and renewable energy as well as for high-school STEM outreach programs such as Camp GEMS and Explorers Post.

Northern mathematics professors recognized

 

Two Ohio Northern University professors of mathematics, Khristo Boyadzhiev and Mihai Caragiu, have been named to a list of the Top 25 STEM college professors in Ohio by StateStats.org, in conjunction with partner website OnlineSchoolsOhio.com.

The two sites set out to find post-secondary educators who had been recognized recently for excellence in the classroom, on campus and in the community. Statestats.org is a nonprofit organization that builds free, open-source tools with the goal of increasing accessibility to education and information through the use of new technologies.

Ohio Northern University to present ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’

Ohio Northern University's Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present “Dancing at Lughnasa” from Thursday, Sept. 19, to Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. In addition, there will be two matinee performances: Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.

Kenneth Reid awarded IEEE-USA Professional Achievement Award

Kenneth Reid, Ohio Northern University’s director of engineering education and first-year engineering, and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been awarded the 2013 IEEE-USA Professional Achievement Award for “pioneering undergraduate engineering education curriculum” for the development of ONU’s Bachelor of Science for engineering education program.

ONU's athletic training program re-accredited by CAATE

 

The Ohio Northern University athletic training program has received the maximum continuing accreditation award of 10 years from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

The ONU program has met all of the nationally recognized Standards for Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs as set by the CAATE. The award resulted from a comprehensive evaluation of the ONU athletic training program, including a self-study and on-site visit in February 2013. ONU’s program was initially accredited in 1998.
