Northern captures fourth at Human Powered Vehicle Challenge

The Ohio Northern University chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) captured fourth place at the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) East competition at the University of Central Florida April 11-13.

Thirty-two teams of ASME student members took part in the competition, which consisted of three races (a men’s and women’s drag race and an endurance event) as well as design and innovation evaluations. The host school, the University of Central Florida, took top overall honors, with Rose Hulman finishing second and Franklin Olin College finishing third.

Ohio Northern University competes at SAE Aero Design East Competition

The Ohio Northern University student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) placed 16th at the SAE Aero Design East Competition in Cummings, Ga., from April 11-14. Forty-two teams participated in the weekend competition, including national championship teams from Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and Poland.

The ONU airplane, dubbed “Northern Comfort,” was designed and built entirely by students. The flight goal of the competition was to successfully lift and fly the maximum weight possible in the airplane while adhering to certain flight-mission requirements.

Northern University students honored with Dankook Award

Ohio Northern University presented Dankook Awards to Jayce Born, a senior criminal justice major from Lancaster, Ohio, and Eric Ambos, a senior business management major from Botkins, Ohio, at ONU’s Honors Day on April 26.

Presented since 1974, the Dankook Award is an annual reciprocal award exchanged between Dankook University in South Korea and Ohio Northern University. The award recognizes students with outstanding records in academics, student leadership, co-curricular activities and service.

MPPA student finishes first in IMA Student Manuscript Competition

Darren Miller, a graduate student in Ohio Northern University’s Master of Professional Practice in Accounting program, has won the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Manuscript Competition. 

Miller, whose winning paper will be published on the IMA website, will be recognized at the IMA National Conference in June 2014 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Miller’s paper was titled “Accounting Internships: How an internship helped me validate my career choice and so much more.” Miller, who is from Sugarcreek, Ohio, graduated with an undergraduate degree in accounting from ONU in August 2013.

University receives high marks for ROI

Ohio Northern University is ranked among the top schools in the nation and in the state of Ohio for its students’ tuition return on investment (ROI), according to the recently released 2014 PayScale College ROI Report.

ONU ranked third for private schools and sixth overall in the state of Ohio, along with institutions such as Case Western University, Miami University, University of Dayton and Denison University. Nationally, ONU placed 282nd (113th for private universities) out of 1,330 institutions nationwide.
