Alger says "Treat!" during Thursday's Halloween celebration

Sheriff Keith Everhart hands out candy to Chuck and Jessica Kaman's  sons, Colton and Kylar, in Alger on Thursday.

Some years, Halloween in various communities occurs on different days, but this year all area towns decided Halloween would be on the same day, so the sheriff's office was busy all over the county.

Sheriff Everhart had eight deputies plus Volunteers in Public Service handing out candy in every community that evening.

The Alger Community Center opened its doors for Halloween.

Along came a spider...probably the biggest anyone has ever seen. Here, Erika Teeters protects Jansen and Molly Rietschlin from the arthropod. Jessica and Troy Cassie devised the spider out of PVC pipe and a laundry basket for a display at their home, 542 N. Main.

University Greek organizations and members earn recognition,

After participation in national events

Several Ohio Northern University sorority and fraternity chapters and its members have recently earned recognition for their accomplishments and have participated in national events. 

Greek life at ONU serves an important role in helping many students connect on campus as well as adding to the college experience and preparing them for their future pursuits.

County underage drinking, drug abuse committee

Hardin County has received an $80,000 grant to deal with underage drinking and drug abuse. Two Ada people have been named to the 8-member advisory committee.

They are:
Michelle Musser, associate professor of pharmacy practice;
Rachel Jackson, a pharmacy student from Lebanon, Ohio.

Data will be gathered to find out the amount of underage drinking between the ages of 12 and 20 and drug misuse of people between 12 and 25.

A prevention specialist will be hired to work with the county's young people. The Partnership for Violence Free Families was awarded the grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Anne Stratton will appraise antiques on Nov. 2

Anne Stratton, a well know antiques appraiser, will be at the Hardin Northern Public Library, 153 N. Main, Dunkirk, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

You may take three items to be appraised. She will not appraise money, stamps, weapons, or Bibles.

She will advise how best to care for your antiques and share the original use of the item. For more information, call the library at 419-759-3558.
