By Betzy McMaster RN, WCC, OMS Wound Care Solutions

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that diverts a portion of the intestines to the outer abdominal wall to create a stoma that expels stool. It is estimated 450,000 people in the U.S. have an ostomy. It is a new way of living and with modern medicine, patients can experience a full life again.

Fun to do the impossible!

By Karen Kier, Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

One of my favorite quotes is by Walt Disney. He was quoted to say that “it’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” Disney would point out that you need to focus on the big picture and it takes courage to fight for your dreams. He successfully won 22 Academy Awards. His first Academy Award was in 1932 for the Best Short Subject (Cartoon) for the film Flowers and Trees. He was given an Honorary Academy Award the same year for his creation of Mickey Mouse. In 1939, he received an Honorary Academy Award for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. His only Best Picture Academy Award was in 1964 for Mary Poppins.

Weekend Doctor: Gross motor skills in children

By Lisa Stewart, Physical Therapist, Julie A. Cole Rehab and Sports Medicine Clinic

Does your child lack typical skills for their age? Are they not keeping up with their peers? Gross motor delay is a broad term that describes a child who performs developmental skills later than usual. This could be crawling, standing, walking or even jumping. It could also be poor ball skills, poor running form or clumsy gait.

Every child will learn skills at their own pace and on their own time, but some children have a more difficult time learning new skills and need a little help to progress their development. Below is a list of developmental milestones and the typical age range a child will master them.

Weekend Doctor: Infant torticollis

By Lisa Stewart, Physical Therapist, Julie A. Cole Rehab and Sports Medicine Clinic

Is your infant only looking to one side? Do they constantly tilt their head to one direction? Torticollis is a condition where the muscles on the side of your child's neck are tight, which prevents them from turning their head to both sides equally, or they tilt their head to one side more than the other. There are two types of torticollis. The first being congenital torticollis, which means present at birth. The second is called acquired torticollis, which means it occurred later in infancy or even childhood.

Have Fun Storming the Castle!

Karen Kier, Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

You may remember one of the lines from the 1987 movie The Princess Bride. The movie debuted on October 9 of that year. The 98-minute movie won the 1988 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, as well as being named in the top 100 greatest love stories by the American Film Institute. In the movie, Miracle Max and Valerie, played by actors Billy Crystal and Carol Kane, had the famously repeated line of “have fun storming the castle.” In the movie, they are using the term literally by indicating that Inigo Montoya, Fezzik, and Wesley were going to storm Prince Humperdinck’s castle to save Princess Buttercup.

Weekend Doctor: Physical and mental costs of war

By James H. Legge III, MSN, APRN-CNP, PMHNP

The sands of time include many pivotal dates: On September 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur accepts the formal surrender of Imperial Japan; in late July of 1953, the Korean War comes to an end, with the 38th parallel becoming the dividing line between North and South Korea; nearly 20 years later, on April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese tanks roll through the gates of the Presidential palace in Saigon. More recently, August 15, 2021, is now remembered as the day Kabul, Afghanistan fell to the Taliban.
