The Ohio Northern University Music Department presents the Climax Jazz Band in Presser Hall on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Based in Canada, the Climax Jazz Band is a six-piece traditional jazz band known for its wide variety of tunes, with lots of vocals. Their particular brand of traditional jazz includes marches, blues, ragtime, spirituals and popular dance tunes.

The band has 26 CDs, including two award-winners from the Canadian Collectors’ Congress.

Two movies will be screening throughout the week at Ada Theatre.

Showtimes are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9:10 p.m.

Monday thru Thursday screenings at 7 p.m.

Showing starting Friday, September 6 and playing through Sunday, September, 8 will be PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS (PG).

Showtimes are Friday 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m and 7 p.m.

All seats are $4.

The next meeting of the Hardin County Democratic Central and Executive Committees will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Henry’s Restaurant, 995 North Detroit Street, Kenton.  Committee members should park on the north side of the restaurant and enter the main doors.

Final plans will be made for the Fall Campaign Luncheon to be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church north of Kenton on State Route 68 at 13502 Township Road 80.  Carry out orders will be available at 11:30 a.m.. 

Brauen's Gourds will hold a fall open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, and 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8.

The open house is at the rural residence of Don and Jody Brauen, 7140 Tom Fett Road, Bluffton. Hundreds of decorative gourds will be available for sale. The gourds are created in an assortment of themes from seasonal to sports teams.

Inspired by a friend who grew gourds, the Brauens began with a small patch 10 years ago. Since then that patch has grown to cover three acres, producing up to 8,000 gourds a year. Among the varieties customers traditionally see include kettles, martins, bushels, penguins, apples and canteens.

Richland Manor, 7400 Swaney Road, Bluffton, invites community members to its 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, tailgate party. The event is free and open to the public.

It will have tailgate food, live music and visits from area cheerleaders and mascots. Wally Jones and his band will entertain.
