Tales of a haunted prison at Ada Public Library

By Amy Eddings

Imagine spending the night in a pitch-black, abandoned, 119-year-old prison, one with a reputation for being haunted. Now imagine doing this willingly, and paying good money for the opportunity, too.

MORE CREEPY PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF STORY.

That’s what plenty of sane people do at the Ohio State Reformatory, the huge, castle-like structure in Mansfield that famously lent its brooding, forbidding presence to the hit 1994 movie, “The Shawshank Redemption,” starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

Want a good ghost story or two? Stop in at the Ada Public Library

It's October. Want a good scare or two? Ada Public Library can help.

Two library events this month offer interesting information and potential spooky stories. Here goes:

• On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. join the library for a "Secrets of the Ohio State Reformatory" program. A volunteer from the Reformatory will share some spooky stories about the former prison.

• On Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. members of the Ohio Researchers of Banded Spirits (ORBS) will present a program of their experiences investigating the paranormal.

Both events are free and open to the public.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at the Ada Library

On Tuesday, October 6th the Ada Public Library will kick-off the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program!

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. In an attempt to spread the love of reading, and also encourage a successful start to your child’s education, we encourage you to embark on 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Sounds daunting, but if you read just 1 book/day, that’s 365 books in 1 year, 730 books in 2 years, or 1,095 books in 3 years.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Kids interested in letting their stuffed animals have a Sleepover party at the Ada Library with Ms. Natalie and Ms. Amanda should drop their stuffed animals off at the Library this Friday, September 25th between 3:30-4:30p.m.

The stuffed animals will enjoy an evening packed with games, storytime, popcorn and a movie, before we settle down for the night.

Any questions please contact Ms. Natalie or Ms. Amanda at the Library: 419-634-5246.
