The future occupation listed next to Karl Roider’s photo in the 1961 Ada High School Yearbook is “history professor.”
While many high school students divert from their initial career paths, Roider never wavered. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s and doctorate in European History from Stanford University, he became a history instructor at Louisiana State University. He stayed for 45 years, rising to full professor and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences before retiring in 2014.

The Ada Public Library will ask voters for a 1-mill, 5-year, operating expense levy on the Nov. 5 general election ballot, according to Rhett Grant, library director.
The cost of the levy is approximately $35 per year for owners of a $100,000 home, or less than 10 cents per day ($1.82 per month).
“The amount of income from the State of Ohio, paid through the Hardin County Auditor, has dropped over the last few years,” said Grant. “We seek to recover that loss and not be as dependent upon the State of Ohio.”
He added that the library is not asking for the levy to reduce any funds from the recent library building addition.
Ada Public Library’s adult book discussion group’s focus in Sept. is “The Great Alone" by Kristin Hannah.
The book discussion, open to the public, is at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the library. The monthly discussion group is open to new members.
Contact the circulation desk for a copy of the coming month's book or more information.
