Republic Services awarded Ada residential trash bid; Waste Management out after 12 years in Ada

After 12 years of service, Waste Management will no longer be collecting Ada’s residential trash. 

The Village Council voted to accept Republic Services as the community’s new waste hauler, because its sealed bid was lower than Waste Management’s.  The contract is for three years, beginning Dec. 1, with an option to renew for another three years.

The savings?  Thirty-seven cents per customer per year.  Republic’s proposed monthly rate and fuel charge was $16.48.  Waste Management’s was $16.84.  Allen County Refuse, another bidder, priced itself out of the running at $17.34.

Ada council will review solid waste bids on Sept. 1

The Icon will begin to cover Ada council meetings this fall. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Tuesday's agenda and minutes from the Aug. 18 meeting are in an attachment at the bottom of this story.

Among items on council's agenda includes review of Aug. 20 bid opening for solid waste contracts that begin Dec. 1.

Bids were received from Republic Services, Waste Management and Allen County Refuse. The village currently contracts with Waste Management.

Special council meeting set May 26

David Retterer, Ada mayor, has called a special council meeting for Tuesday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Ada Historic Depot for the purpose of considering two resolutions and a pay ordinance.

Retterer announced police chief recipient of distinguished service award

Mayor Dave Retterer announced at village council on May 5  that Police Chief Michael Harnishfeger received the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police distinguished service award for his efforts in leading the local department for the past 14 years.

During the meeting Chief Harnishfeger reported on two upcoming events.

He said there will be a baseball game at the park at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 16, pitting the police, fire, and ambulance squads against teachers and administrators from the Ada Schools. Admission will be one can of food which will be given to charity.

Ada council won't restrict businesses from placing items on Main Street sidewalks

Ada village council finally laid to rest the discussion about the use of sidewalks on a regular basis by store owners displaying merchandise and signs.

At Tuesday's meeting, council members voted unanimously not to restrict business owners.

However, a proposal may be made in the future to restrict businesses, which may want to sell alcoholic beverages to patrons seated in a roped off area of the sidewalk.
