Village faces uncertainty with rising health care costs

By Amy Eddings

News that the Village of Ada is facing a 19% increase in its employee health insurance premiums went down like cod liver oil at Tuesday night’s council meeting at the village’s offices.

Council members and Mayor David Retterer expressed dismay and alarm at Anthem’s new rates. Under the terms of the renewal, an unmarried Ada village employee with no children would see his or her rate go from $448 a month to $532 a month.  A married village employee with two children would see their monthly cost jump from $1,382 to $1,642.

No surprise: Ada swimming pool receipts lower than last year

It’s no surprise to anyone that Ada pool receipts this summer were lower than previous years. That loss is a result of many factors including the weather.

In Tuesday’s Ada council packet a year-end pool report compares income and expenses for the past five seasons. Three of this year’s bottom lines show:

• $37,400 pool revenue before income tax ($35,933 in 2014)
• $112,880 income tax receipts ($163,203 in 2014)
• $150,288 total revenue after income tax  ($199,136 in 2014)

On the plus side expenses were $97,276 this year ($128,603 in 2014).

On council agenda: First reading of legislation that changes waste-recycling contractor

Ada council will consider the first reading of legislation authorizing Republic Services as the solid waste and recycling contractor for the village. The action is on the Tuesday, Sept. 15 council agenda.

On Sept. 1 council voted to accept Republic Services as the community’s new waste hauler, because its sealed bid was lower than Waste Management’s.

The contract is for three years, beginning Dec. 1, with an option to renew for another three years.
