Ohio Northern University Jazz Band to explore ‘ONU Jazz Through the Years’ in April 30 concert

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents the ONU Jazz Band on Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

The ONU Jazz Band, under the direction of David Sycks, will take a stroll down memory lane as it explores “ONU Jazz Through the Years.” Sycks is the Bluffton High School band director.

The group will play a repertoire from the first days of ONU jazz in the 1960s up to the present, including works by Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Count Basie and Chick Corea. Everett Collier, the “golden voice” of jazz, will be the narrator for the evening.

Cami Hazelton wins first at state in gymnastics

Cami Hazelton, 11-year-old Ada 5th grader, just finished her second competitive gymnastics year representing Gold Medal Gymnastics in Findlay. This year she competed as a Level 4 and won 1st place in her age division for the 2015 Ohio Compulsory State Meet held in Bowling Green April 10, 2015.  

She also received individual event titles including a tie for 3rd on uneven bars with a score of 8.900; 1st on vault with score 9.050; 1st of balance beam with score 9.100; 1st on floor with score 9.225; and 1st all-around with score 36.275.

Saudi Arabian internship program = cultural opportunities for Ada schools and its students

Robin VanBuskirk, Ada’s K-12 principal, describes the local school's partnership with ONU's Prison Management Certificate Program for men from Saudi Arabia.

How many children from Saudi Arabia attend the local school?
The program began in 2008 with 32 students. This year there were 18 students in the fall. Currently, there are only 7 enrolled because several of the wives went home with their children after the first semester. The fathers, who are in a two-year prison management program, spend the spring on internships at prisons throughout Ohio.

Middle East correspondent to speak April 28 in Dicke Forum

Martin Sieff, noted Middle East correspondent, journalist and author, will speak on “Dangerous Ignorance: Why U.S. Policymakers Get the Middle East Wrong” in Ohio Northern University’s Dicke Forum on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the ONU Department of History, Politics, and Justice; the University Committee on the Arts and Special Events (CASE); and Phi Beta Delta.

Sieff’s lecture will focus on the perceived lies, myths and clichés perpetuated by the U.S. government and the media, and he will describe what is currently happening in the Middle East and what is expected in the future.
