Copper theft, meth bust, keeping Ada police bus

By Amy Eddings

There were no meetings and no reports forthcoming from Ada village council committee heads during the village council meeting Tuesday night.  But Police Chief Mike Harnischfeger had plenty to say when it came time for him to give his monthly public safety report.

He said someone tried to steal copper wire from the construction site of the new wastewater treatment center at East Lincoln Avenue near Grass Creek, cutting an opening in the wire fencing around the plant.  A patrol officer interrupted the theft and discovered the wire.

You'll see this on Sunday's Candy Cane Tour of Homes in Ada

Photo and story by Monty Siekerman
Mark Hilan arranges a creche on a mantle at a home that will be part of the Candy Cane Tour of Homes from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

He and his wife, Amy Eddings, live at 508 N. Main St. in one of the town's largest (3 floors and a full basement) and oldest homes. Many on the tour will be as curious to see the inside of the home as much as the holiday decorations.

Since living there the past year, Mark and Amy have spent considerable effort refurbishing the inside and outside of the stately home known for its late Victorian Queen Anne architecture.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding...here comes a fast freight through Ada

The Ada Icon is fascinated by trains, as most viewers know. On Dec. 2 two Icon photographers captured this freight coming east from Lima.

Our photo essay includes still photos of the advancing and then passing freight.

In addition, we took a video of the train, which was pulling oil cars - we lost track of the number - in a fast freight through Ada.

The former mainline Pennsylvania Railroad through Ada is one a single-track Indiana and Ohio Railway, which is part of the Genese & Wyoming short line system.
