Ohio Northern Model United Nations team garners honorable mention honors

The Ohio Northern University Model United Nations team was presented with an honorable mention delegation award at NMUN•NY 2013, the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City from March 24-28.

ONU, representing the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, claimed the prestigious honor at the international conference, which draws more than 5,000 students annually and has participants from all over the world. (Approximately 50 percent of the participants are from outside the U.S.) At the conference, the delegations discuss current global issues on 20 selected committees.

New Ada Kiwanians

Three new members join Ada Kiwanis Club

President Myrna McCurdy called the Wednesday March 26th special meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club to order at 6:00 at the Community Health Professional building S.R. 235, Ada.

The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.

The following were welcomed as guests: Anne Schulman, Joanne Berg, Arlene Allison, Linda Ferguson, Kelly MacDonald and Daniel MacDonald.
A potluck dinner was enjoyed ball all those in attendance.

-Members were updated on Pancake Day finances by Bryan Marshall, Treasurer.

Acclaimed author and actress Carol Drinkwater comes to Ada April 22

Ohio Northern University will host a lecture by international author and actress Carol Drinkwater in the Dicke Forum on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. Drinkwater’s lecture is titled “The Olive Route.” The event is free and open to the public.      

Drinkwater is perhaps most familiar to audiences for her award-winning portrayal of Helen Herriot in the BBC series “All Creatures Great and Small.” A popular and acclaimed author and filmmaker, Drinkwater also has published 19 books.

Robert Preston operated the McGuffey Hardware for 55 years

Robert U. "Bob" Preston, 83, of rural Alger, died at 4:21 p.m. April 2, 2013, at the Lima Memorial Health System, of complications following open heart surgery.

He was born Jan. 20, 1930, in the home he lives in today, the son of William M. and Merle E. Crowe Preston, who preceded him in death. On July 15, 1951, he married Mary K. Clark, who survives. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage.

Men's tennis notches sixth consecutive victory with 7-2 win over Wooster

The Ohio Northern men's tennis team won its sixth straight match by a 7-2 score over nonconference foe Wooster on Thursday afternoon at the University Courts.

The Polar Bears are now 8-4 on the season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 5-10.

In doubles action, the tandem of senior Joey Frank and junior Do Thai dominated for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Freshman John Mostowy and junior Josh Saunders followed with a 8-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position.

Sophomore Sam Prewitt and junior Blake Troller finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
