Ohio Northern University to conduct SMAarts program

Students from five area elementary schools will participate in Ohio Northern University’s SMArts (Saturday Morning Art) enrichment program, learning art and more in the Wilson Art Center on Oct. 26, Nov. 2, and Nov. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Third and fourth grade students from Ada, Bath, Bluffton, Hardin Northern and Perry schools will attend the enrichment programs designed for students interested in the visual arts and creative experience. The SMArts program offers student engagement in a variety of media and activities, including creating handmade paper, photography, drawing and painting.

Men's soccer: Kinkopf scores twice to lead ONU past Mount Union in OAC opener

Freshman Matt Kinkopf  scored twice to lead the No. 14 Ohio Northern men's soccer to team to a 3-0 win over Mount Union in its OAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.

The Polar Bears are now 9-2-0 and 1-0-0 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders fall to 5-6-0, 0-1-0.

Kinkopf now has a team best seven goals on the season.

Senior Stephen Perkins  got ONU on the board just 11 minutes in, when he headed in a cross from sophomore Chase Mueller .

At the 19:22 mark, Kinkopf made it 2-0 in favor of the Polar Bears when scored off of a pass from sophomore Shintaroh Itoh .

Albert "Bud" Garver was a WWII Navy veteran

Albert R. "Bud" Garver, age 86, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 5:02 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima.

He was born on February 10, 1927 in Marion County, Ohio to Albert R. and Geneva (Hitchcock) Garver who preceded him in death. On May 21, 1945 he married Mae Ann Evans and she died on January 24, 2002. He later married Dorothy (Poe) Freund on January 4, 2006 and she survives in Ada.

Bud was a welder for Superior Coach of Lima and General Dynamics of Lima retiring in 1991. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during WWII with the 301 NCB's.

Hardin County Extension news: Western Bean Cutworms not in traps this year

Ohio State University Extension, Hardin County – Western Bean Cutworms were not caught in Hardin County OSU Extension traps this growing season. Four bucket type traps were placed around the county starting in July and were checked weekly for this pest by trapping the adult moth. The trapping of this agricultural crop pest is a part of a statewide OSU Extension monitoring program.

Still time to nominate Ada's Distinguished Citizen of the Year - here's the all-time list

The nomination period for Ada's Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award for 2013 is now open.

A nomination form is a printer-friendly attachment at the bottom of this story. Copies are also available in  in the Village Office. Nominations and completed forms are due by Oct. 18, according to Angela Polacheck of the Village of Ada.

The award will be presented at the 48th annual Town & Gown Banquet Monday, Nov. 4. The evening's festivities will begin with a social hour from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.  Tickets are $15, and tickets will be available soon.
