By the light of a single firefly

By Robert McCool

I have been so fortunate in my life so far that I have had opportunities to share my love of books and the written word with the readers of this column on a semi-regular basis.

I began to write for the Icon when founder Fred Steiner asked me to review books that I liked, and I chose those contemporary popular fiction ones that I believed had a quality or message that meant something important to our current time and circumstances. I was lucky to find those books on the new books shelf of my local library, and sometimes I took the suggestions of my fellow book lovers. It was a joy to bring the book alive with my reviews, and I actually managed to read and write about each book in a week's time. That was how much I enjoyed the task.

When the new owner of the Icon took over, she allowed me to keep this column and even encouraged my writing. And the Icon flourishes under her management. I believe that I had more interested readers that followed me then. The support that I received made me want to write better and more relevant reviews than I had ever done before.

Head Out on the Highway: Driving and medications

In 1967, Steppenwolf wrote their hit Born to Be Wild. The song begins by telling listeners to “Get your motor runnin’/Head out on the highway/Lookin' for adventure” and we have an image in our head; cruising down an open road in our dream car, radio playing our favorite tune and feeling the freedom of adventure. We even go back to the excitement of passing our driving test, obtaining that coveted driver’s license and gaining the independence of exploration. For some of us, it opens a conversation if it is safer to leave the car in the garage and take a ride in the passenger seat due to the use of some medications.

In September, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) released a study focusing on medications that alter road test performances among healthy older adults with good cognitive function. Based on previous literature, older adults are at a greater risk of being involved in an automotive accident compared to middle-aged adults. There could be multiple factors contributing to this claim, including being frail and having more cognitive impairment.

The Ada High School volleyball team was swept in three sets by top-seeded New Bremen in the Div. IV district semifinals Tuesday night, October 24, at Wapakoneta.

The Bulldogs lost to the powerful Cardinals 25-14, 25-8, 25-5 to finish their season 13-11.

Top-seeded MAC tri-champion New Bremen improved to 20-4 with the sweep.

The Cardinals advance to the district finals against league foe Marion Local (17-7) in Wapakoneta.

“We came out strong and really fought hard and battled in set one,” said Ada head coach Kyleigh Woodruff. “We struggled to side out in sets two and three, and they had too many runs against us.

“New Bremen is a great team with hard float-servers who kept us off balance,” she continued. “They were able to put the ball away offensively.”
