October 2021

To the Voters of Ada:

After listening to and reading messages from the school board candidates a couple things were very clear to me.  Almost none of them went straight to the source for their information. Only one could say that she regularly attended school board meetings, or spoke to the superintendent and the treasurer in one-on-one meetings about how things run on daily basis.    I spoke with that candidate and she expressed how both the superintendent and treasurer willingly answered her questions openly and honestly to the extent that they did not violate any privacy matters.

I can’t help but wonder...

Robert L. Shields, Jr.  age 78, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 12:46 a.m. at Mercy-Health St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

Bill Marchal, the former owner of the Bluffton Dari Freeze, has received a patent for his invention of an improved style battery clamp that can easily be attached and removed without tools.

When asked about his background as an inventor, Marchal noted that he’s always looking for ways to make things work better. As an ice cream shop owner, he invented a better way to heat up hot fudge, the No Water Bath thermal transfer pad.

As a boy, he wanted to win a drawing for a bicycle at the local grocery store. To enter, you had to buy a box of laundry soap. He proceeded to buy boxes and sell them to neighbors; one bought twelve boxes. And he won the bicycle.

One of my favorite quotes is by Walt Disney. He was quoted to say that “it’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” Disney would point out that you need to focus on the big picture and it takes courage to fight for your dreams. He successfully won 22 Academy Awards. His first Academy Award was in 1932 for the Best Short Subject (Cartoon) for the film Flowers and Trees. He was given an Honorary Academy Award the same year for his creation of Mickey Mouse. In 1939, he received an Honorary Academy Award for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. His only Best Picture Academy Award was in 1964 for Mary Poppins.
