Big 4th period leads Lady Bulldogs past LCC

Sumner and Wills each tallied 14 • Wills nailed a trey and 9 foul shots • Kylie Acheson netted season-high 9 points on the strength of 2 triples

LIMA - The visiting Ada girls basketball team poured in 23 fourth-period points to rally past former league foe Lima Central Catholic 46-35 Thursday night.

The Lady Bulldogs led 9-4 after the first period and 14-12 at intermission after a low-scoring first half. LCC edged in front 24-23 heading to the fourth quarter.

But Ada dominated the final period 23-11 behind sophomore Courtney Sumner, who scored nine points, and seven markers from senior Miranda Wills.

The purple and sank nine of 14 foul shots in the final stanza as they doubled the output of their first three periods in the fourth quarter alone.

Angela L. (Justice) Jeffrey 1966-2021

Angela L. (Justice) Jeffrey, age 54, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, at her residence in McGuffey.

She was born on July 29, 1966, in Lima, Ohio, to Roy and Beverly R. (Prater) Justice. Her father survives in Alger and her mother preceded her in death. Angela married Charles “CJ” Jeffrey and he survives in McGuffey.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip Justice.

It was her wish to be cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, P.O. Box 41, Alger, Ohio 45812 for the benevolence of the family.

King Day celebration asks: Do differences make a difference?"

“Do Differences Make a Difference?” is the theme of next week's Hardin County Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration, according to Maya Fischhoff of Ada, one of the planners of the event.

The event is Monday Jan. 18, at 4 p.m., on Zoom and Facebook Live.

"In honor of Dr. King, we will discuss the differences that distinguish and connect us. How can we use these as a foundation to build connection?" said Fischhoff.

Several programming options for area farmers

Winter is the time that farmers attend meetings to receive the latest information on new products, learn best management practices, renew pesticide and fertilizer licenses, and receive updates on university research.

Many of these programs are provided by the local county Extension office. But then, the pandemic has changed everything.

To meet this information need, the Hardin County Extension office is partnering with the Ohio State University AgCrops Team to provide virtual (online) winter meetings that a farmer or crop consultant can participate at the time of the presentation or later as a recording.

Covid-19 vaccine - as things roll out

It has been over a month since the COVID-19 vaccines have received FDA emergency use authorization (EUA). 

What have we learned about the vaccines as the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States are increasing? 

Many health care workers and long-term care residents have been receiving the vaccine with some completing the 2-part vaccine series. A government working group designed the plan to distribute the vaccine. 

2021 is major local election year in Ada

4 council seats, 2 school board seats, 2 township trustee seat on the ballot

This is a major election year in Ada.

Four council seats, two school board seats and two township trustee seats will be on the Nov. 2 general election ballot. Winners of those races will have 4-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2022.

Ada council seats on the ballot are currently held by:

Jeffery Oestreich - Republican
Noah Ristau - No party designation
Robert Simmons - Republican

ONU students return to Ada Jan. 19

As as a health precaution all students must complete an at-home covid-19 test

The spring term at Ohio Northern University begins on Tueday, Jan. 19. The protocol for students returning to Ada are spelled out on the ONU Facebook.

Those follow:

• Complete the at-home COVID-19 test by depositing saliva into the vial and shipping it via UPS (not your mailbox or post office) Monday, Jan.11.

• UPS trucks pick up packages at UPS Stores, many CVS stores, Advance Auto Parts stores, plus numerous local businesses. Go to ups.com/dropoff to find a location nearest you. Remember, your package is pre-paid to ship, so all you need to do is get it to the UPS drop-off location.
