Kenton hosts two-day tennis tournament

The Kenton High School tennis program will hold a two-day tournament Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29, at the Kenton High School tennis courts.

The event is a fund-raiser for the tennis program. The schedule follows:

Saturday, July 28

Matches start at 9 a.m. – middle school singles, high school and adult singles

Sunday, July 29

Matches start at 9 a.m. - Elementary singles, high school doubles, adult doubles

Competitors are guaranteed two matches. Awards will be presented. Registration is $10 per person. Contact Jennifer Flowers at 419-679-6022 or email jflowers9101@columbus,rr.com to register.

Four named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team

Ohio Northern senior women's golfer Raven Venegas (Lima/Shawnee), juniors Caitlin Silva (Hilliard/Bradley) and Alaina Mikolajewski (Piqua), and sophomore Taylor Daniel (Columbia City, Ind.) were all named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team.

To be nominated, individuals must meet the team's minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50.

All four individuals previously received notoriety for their academic success after being named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team earlier this postseason.

Ada Gators swim team is in a fourth place after the first day of the Western Ohio Aquatics League champships in Wapakoneta.

State road work will affect only one area near Ada next week.

State Route 309 between the Allen County line and the Kenton will be reduced to one lane through the work zone for resurfacing. Work is being performed by Bluffton Paving, Bluffton.

Ada chamber offering several new benefits for members

Ada Area Chamber of Commerce recently joined the southern Ohio Chamber Alliance (SOCA), and now offers its members several new benefits, according to Heather Cox, chamber board president.

"We are very excited to offer our members these benefits," said Cox. "The SOCA benefit program provides small business members health insurance benefits.

It's a volleyball season warm-up

Ada junior high has volleyball open gym twice a week for two hours during June and July.

Lindsay Walden, coach for the past three years, works alongside Kristie Steiner, elementary art teacher. The girls’ first match will be at 5 p.m. on Aug. 20 against Ridgemont.

Ivory Shepherd, 1938 - 2018

Ivory Shepherd, age 80, died on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 12:56 a.m. at Shawnee Manor, Lima.

          He was born on April 21, 1938 in Langley, Kentucky to the late George and Lucie (Moore) Shepherd.  On the October 30, 1959 Ivory married his former wife, Joyce Elaine Shepherd who survives in Waynesfield.            

          Ivory was permanently disabled from a stroke in 1963, but never let his disability get in the way of raising his three boys and being there for his family and friends.

Carol S Reams, 1943 - 2018

 Carol S. Reams, age 74, died on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 4:41 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System. 

            She was born October 8, 1943 in Michigan to the late Walter and Martha (Miller) Hughes.  On January 27, 1968 she married Gary B. Reams and he died on September 30, 2015.

            Carol retired from Sodexo Food Service at Ohio Northern University, Ada.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carol was an avid reader, she loved to color coloring books and was a big animal lover.
