VAN BUREN - The short-handed Ada wrestling team finished 27th out of 29 teams at the tough two-day Van Buren Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Swanton won the team title with 225 points, followed by Gibsonburg in a distant second with 148 points. Ada scored 13.5 points to finish ahead of Pandora-Gilboa and Lincolnview.
Bulldog senior ace Chase Sumner did not compete due to a sprained ankle.
Daniel Beemer of Ottawa-Glandorf won his third VBI championship in the 182-pound division to earn tournament Most Valuable Wrestler honors.
No Bulldog placed in the top six of any weight divisions.

ADA - Host Ada took out five weeks of frustration on winless county rival Hardin Northern by posting a 76-43 blowout win in their annual non-conference boys basketball clash Saturday night.
The purple and gold snapped a nine-game losing skid and improved to 3-11 with the lopsided victory, their first since mid-December over Allen East. Meanwhile, the youthful Polar Bears fell to 0-13 with the defeat.

The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day with a 176-113 victory over Oberlin on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium.
The Polar Bears improve to 5-1 overall, while the Yeowomen fall to 1-6.
ONU won 9 of the 16 events but used superior depth to post the 63-point victory.
Junior Kierra Watson (Brownsburg, Ind. and freshman Marissa Taylor (Granite Falls, N.C./South Caldwell) led Ohio Northern with three victories on the day.

ADA — The No. 10-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team posted its 16th straight victory on Saturday afternoon after defeating visiting Mount Union 59-43 at the ONU Sports Center in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.
The Polar Bears improve to 16-1 overall and remain perfect at 10-0 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders drop to 8-9, 5-5.
Senior Amy Bullimore (Morrow/Little Miami) led the way offensively for Northern as she tallied a team-best 14 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

ADA — Senior Braden Kuhn (Tiffin/Columbian) qualified for the NCAA Diving Regionals, leading the Ohio Northern men's swimming and diving team to a 225-68 win over Oberlin Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium.
The Polar Bears improve to 6-0 overall, while the Yeomen fall to 0-6.
Kuhn won the 1-meter diving with 276.85 points for six dives. It marks the second time this season that Kuhn has surpassed the NCAA standard of 275.00 points on the 1-meter board.

ALLIANCE — Junior Ryan Bruns (Chickasaw/Marion Local) broke Ohio Northern's 36-year old blocked shots record, leading the men's basketball team to a 73-66 victory at Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at the McPherson Center.
Bruns blocked three shots in the contest, giving him 172 for his 3-year career, breaking the previous school record of 171 set by Stan Mories from 1979-82.
Bruns also scored 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Polar Bears (12-5 overall, 7-3 Ohio Athletic Conference).

Thank you, Kevin, for supplying the Ada Icon with birds-eye views of the community taken while soaring in your magnificent flying machines, the small planes you loved to fly whenever the weather permitted.
If one heard a buzzing overhead and looked up to see what looked like a lawnmower with wings, one can be rest assured that the pilot was Kevin Mierzejewski.
Kevin died Friday. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 on Thursday at Hanson-Neely in Ada. Click here for his obituary.

The American Red Cross responded to a fire on Pamela Street in McGuffey late Wednesday night.
The Red Cross provided assistance for immediate needs such as food and clothing to those affected.
“We’re deeply saddened for those who were impacted by this fire,” said Todd James, executive director of the North Central Ohio Chapter. “As we continue to help them, we urge everyone to take steps to minimize the risk of a fire occurring in their home.”

Kevin A. Mierzejewski, 56, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at his residence in Ada, Ohio.
He was born on May 17, 1961 in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Ralph A. and Shirley A. (Ribich) Mierzejewski.
Kevin was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lima where he served on the Finance Committee and was a Eucharistic Minister. He also attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Ada. Kevin enjoyed being a pilot. He was an active member of the Ada community where he was a member of the Ada Rotary Club. Kevin was self employed.
