County population creeps lower

Hardin County has lost 584 people since the 2010 U.S. Census, according to figures recently released by the bureau. In 2010 the county population was 32,058. Today that number stands at 31,474. Most of the loss occurred between 2010-2011 and 2015-2016. In other years the county gained about 50 people each year.

In comparison to nearby counties, Allen lost 2,584 while Hancock gained 1,083 since 2010. Allen's population now is 103,742. Hancock has 75,872 residents.

Ohio gained slightly, going from 11.5 million to 11.6 million people.

Percentage-wise, it's Allen, -2.4; Hardin -1.8; Hancock, +1.4; Ohio, +0.7.

Gospel Ensemble to mark 30th year with concert

Ohio Northern University’s Gospel Ensemble has proved that diversity and inclusion are themes that stand the test of time. The singing group, which was founded in December 1987 for a one-time performance, will perform its 30-year anniversary concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 2 in the McIntosh Center. The concert is free and open to the public

“It began with the notion of starting a group with African-American students that would give them an opportunity to express their spirituality and have a voice in a community where they often felt like strangers,” said Adriane Thompson-Bradshaw, Ph.D., the group’s founder and leader as well as vice president of student affairs at ONU.

Lots of international flavor tonight at ONU

For one shining moment, the world comes together...at a multicultural fair at ONU on Friday evening.

This year's fair is from 5 to 8 p.m. in the ONU Sports Center. The event includes international free food samplings, displays and lots of fun.

The International Services, World Student Organization, Multicultural Planning Committee and ONU Student Senate sponsor the fair.

Last year 25 international flags were flying and they represented the countries which ONU students call home.

Eighth graders rise to the Pi Day Challenge

Several Ada eighth graders won the Pi Day Challenge held earlier this month. Those students earned the right to pie a teacher at lunch earlier this week. More photos are at the bottom of this story.

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant constant π (pi) with the first three digits 3, 1, and 4 thus celebrated March 14.

Even the U.S. House of Representatives got into the act by supporting the designation of Pi Day. (And, of course, pies are involved, which is great for folks with a sweet tooth).

Lester E Mumaw II 1952 - 2017

Lester E. Mumaw II, age 65, died on Wednesday, March 22, at 5:00pm at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus.

He was born on January 11, 1952 in Lima, Ohio to Lester E. and Betty J. (Plummer) Mumaw who preceded him in death. Lester was previously married to Pamela (Parks) Mumaw. He was engaged to Wendy Porter and she survives in LaFayette.

Lester retired from Northwest Towing in Beaverdam where he had worked as an operations manager. He was a member of the Beaverdam Church of Christ. Lester was the current president of the LaFayette Village Council. He was a member of the Colonial Golf Club. He loved to go camping and enjoyed riding his Harley.

Softball wins 10 in a row, baseball drops contest to Anderson

ADA -- The Ohio Northern softball team ran its winning streak to 10 games as the Polar Bears swept Anderson (Ind.) in a double header on Thursday afternoon.

The Polar Bears improve to 13-1 overall, while the Ravens fall to 5-5.

ADA -- A late rally by the Ohio Northern baseball team came up short as the Polar Bears dropped a 6-5 decision to Anderson (Ind.) on Thursday afternoon at Wander Field.

The Polar Bears fall to 8-7 overall, while the Ravens improve to 6-7.

Stocktons give to engineering building

Lee and Shirley Stockton of Troy, Ohio, have made a major gift to the proposed engineering college building. Thus far, $12.3 million of the $15 million goal has been raised or pledged by donors.

 

The 105,000-square-foot facility will be nearly twice the size of the current Biggs Engineering Building and will feature space for collaboration, class projects and community-building,

Night work on I-75 in Findlay to begin Sunday

The following impacts to traffic related to the reconstruction and widening of Interstate 75 through Findlay and Hancock County are scheduled to occur in the coming weeks:
 
Interstate 75 Findlay
 Interstate 75 both northbound and southbound from the area of the Blanchard River (mile marker 159) near Findlay High School to county Road 99 (mile marker 161) will be restricted to one lane at times through the work zone during nighttime hours only beginning Sunday, March 26.
 
• The restrictions are necessary to perform shoulder work and for placement of temporary pavement in preparation for future shifts in traffic patterns.

Bank official to speak at ONU

Michael Prescott, president of U.S. Bank’s Cincinnati market, will deliver the Lovett Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 in the business college. The title of his talk is “What I didn’t learn from textbooks.  The talk is free and open to the public.

 Prescott, who earned a bachelor’s degree with high distinction in accounting from Ohio Northern in 1984, is responsible for the bank’s activities and commercial-lending efforts in the Cincinnati region. He also has market responsibility for Florida; North Carolina; Nashville, Tenn.; Louisville, Ky.; and Saint Louis, Mo. He holds the MBA from Ohio State.
